Ammonium perchlorate synthesis

Synthesis of ammonium perchlorate from NaClO4 + NH4Cl.

You can buy the electrodes here :

Warning : Ammonium perchlorate is a strong oxidizer and a powerful compound used in professional rockets fuels.
This compound can't explode by itself in small quantities, but, under pressure and heat, can lead to a strong explosion.

Like everything in this field, you should refer to the security protocol, local rules and common sense.
This informations are intended for laboratory use.

If you don't remove the persulfate and metabisulfite by Barium carbonate (or chloride or whatever), (I'm not sure about persulfate) a reaction occurs slowly at ambient
temperature and harder with heat who release chlorine gas and a strong runaway, even in the dry final powder.
This dangerous situation happened several times for some users and myself.

[wink to my friend who got banned from chemistry by his wife after that :-s]

The above indications, are a good guarantee to stay in security.
Enjoy !

Great informational vid. Achieved 85.2 % yield with vacuum filtering with 100 ml 0°C water followed by 100 ml isopropyl alcohol. Brilliant work bud oh ya, and -9°C

*For those newbies* !!!
Dont not play roulette with AP.If you doesnt remove NaClO³ from mother liquid you will end up with self ignition by NH⁴ClO³ formation.
Ammonium Chlorate is freaking sensitive and so easy to self ignite.I know it by experience.
As far i see your AP have long crystals (needle) structure and it make my attention to take care with that "AP"
Just advice !

You need to re-crystalize the ammonia perchlorate, and never use tap water, only distilled water. United Nuclear sells a nice affordable hot plate/ magnetic stirrer, and pyro chem source llc sells high grade ammonia perchlorate so You have high grade stuff to compare yours with. I never did a synthesis of ammonia perchlorate, but did potassium chlorate which is so pure, but my secret is re-crystalize it like 5x

One of the best descriptions among others tutorial on YouTube on this theme. Hat off....😎

I tried to make ammonium perchlorate before but failed.
I thought I had succeeded with the complex decomposition reaction of sodium perchlorate and ammonium chloride, but a few days later my AP had turned yellow and had a strong smell.
Perhaps sodium chlorate had not been destroyed.

in this video you have NaClO4 but the one before it is KClO4. Do we just run the Chlorate via MMO but use NaCl instead of KCl? If so is it okay to use Potassium Persulfate with NaCl?

What's the internet site you're documenting on ?

fractionally crystallize the rest out
boiling it down and filtering it while its still warm
then freezing it
NaCl has almost same solubility at 100*C as 0*C

Hi Feanor, I have successfully made perchlorates with your electrodes but something funny happened when I went to make this one, maybe you could explain for me? I made NaClO4 in the usual way (I use ammonium persulfate as can't get potassium here though works fine) then added small amount of metabisulphite to react chlorate as usual. Then I used BaNO3 to precipitate sulphites as I had some (I don't usually do this step when making KClO4). I did not neutralize solution, it remained low ph. Then heated to 80 deg C to plan to get NaClO4 solid to better do stochiometry for reaction with NH4Cl. During heating chloride smell came off, was very slow to evaporate and liquid became yellowish. After some time I stopped and thought to re-test for chlorates and now very strong reaction of chlorates, and very acidic. reacted to a lot of metabisulphite and carbonate and now a mess. Do you think heating the NaClO4 with the nitrate under acid condition has caused an unexpected reaction and breakdown of the perchlorate?
How do you convert NaClO4 to solid?

Could you use strontium or calcium carbonate instead of barium carbonate ?

Your 70% yield might've been due to you miscalculating the water present in the NaClO4. Sodium perchlorate is very hydroscopic and frequently forms monohydrates, adding to the molecular weight. Hence, you need not 69.1g but 79.2g per 100ml to achieve optimal yield.

I used 200ml of water with everything scaled to it and got a whopping 118g(91%) yield!!!(although I'm certain some of it was water and sodium chloride.)

This can be done with monohydrate sodium perchlorate as well?

0:59 Did you added Barium carbonate to the sodium perchlorate solution? Or it was ammonium perchlorate solution? Thanks

Do you need the MMO (Ru-Ir) anode also, or can we just use the lead anode that comes in the complete kit? From watching the other videos, it seems that you use Ru-Fe anode for potassium perchlorate...?

Is it possible to use this method for producing NH4ClO3 by Naclo3?

One more question feanor, i have ammonium perchlorate in my oven four days at 60 deg C and it still looks wet but i poked it today and the crystals crumbled. Is this normal for dry ammonium perchlorate or is it still wet and needs higher temp?

What did you do with the mixture at the beginning?

Do you sell ammonium, or sodium perchlorate? Or just the means to make them? Either way I'm willing to be a customer!

When you separate sodium perchlorate from cell liquor, do you boil all the water away?
