Recorded June 25, 2021

To the adage of repeating the past, does a stretch of inflation at home, the end of prolonged military involvement in a faraway land, and a president lamenting a nation in crisis suggest a return to the America of the 1970s? Hoover Institution senior fellows Niall Ferguson, H. R. McMaster, and John Cochrane discuss the differences between then and now—after sharing photos showcasing their ’70s finery.

ABOUT THE SERIES

GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

When I read Fergussons' "The pity of war" in basic training some 20years ago the lieutenant found it lying on my pillow and asked (positively surprised) "who is reading this?" When it was I who replied "Me" .... Mr Fergussons reputation took a dive in his estimation! 😂

I look forward to this show and was concerned that it had been cancelled. I too am happy that my concern was misplaced

I started driving in 1979, I was one who witnessed gas prices go from well below a dollar to having "$1" stickers on the pumps. Why did they not address the attack on the fuel industry by the current administration..? Because we all know fuel prices affect every other price. I'm just curious 🤔

Please continue even after "this time of pandemic". You have something going of lasting value that transcends "emergency use authorization".

Stay out of uncivilized countries for they are lost as they are.
Will Durant: What is Civilization? Civilization is social order promoting cultural creation. Four elements constitute it: economic provision, political organization, moral traditions and the pursuit of knowledge and the arts.

Anybody interested in the Carter question should read Christopher Lasch, who counseled President Carter before his said speech and wrote about populism well before Trump and Brexit.

Glad to see this again! I would recommend Thomas Sowell "Conquest & Culture" as it pertains to the discussion of British colonization and subsequent decolonization and the disasters that followed in those countries. We could take lessons from this book on the "foundations and experiences" of civil societies and maintaining them. History plainly teaches civil societies evolve. They cannot be imposed. Another issue is the lack of understanding in our society of what actually happened economically in the 70's & 80's.

all due respect JR - we the American people have not now, nor EVER, wanted to be in Afghanistan . Its not our problem. Damn the Taliban and what may come, ENOUGH of trying to make tribal countries Democratic . THE END

Stronger parallels are to the 1870s, in that we are today on the cusp of the biggest era of technological disruption since the post-Civil War era.

I honestly feel that with this unlimited spending and printing money so much more than it should, the inflation is inevitably go up, it will harm the value of the dollar!
