День, когда умер мир - A musical tribute to man's eternal folly and to Metro Last Light

LYRICS:

The Day The World Died Copyright Gavin Dunne 2013

The day the world died
We disappeared
Past rusted turnstiles
We persevere
The wheels of conflict
Still move and turn
The day the world died
Nothing was learned

And the future's a tunnel stretching endlessly
Into nothing stumble in the black
And the light at the end is but a treachery
It will blind you and force you back

The day the world died
We kindled doom
We burned the outside
Took to the gloom
But history's lessons
Are snubbed and spurned
The day the world died
Nothing was learned

День, когда умер мир

And the future's a tunnel stretching endlessly
Into nothing stumble in the black
And the light at the end is but a treachery
It will blind you and force you back

Once more we divide
From peace we turn
The day the world died
Nothing was learned

I read the books recently.

"You could go to a warm bed, read a book, see the news of the world in a small screen of light. The gas made the whole house warm in winter and hunger felt like a foreign lie. What a wonderful world we burned, you kids will never know it, when I die will be forgotten. I'm sorry boy, I'm really sorry"

Fun fact: In Russian "мир" means both "world" and "peace", so "День, когда умер мир" can either mean "the day the world died" or "the day peace died". I think it's great that it works either way for the game.

I think one of the most depressing things is in metro: last light in theater station. There is a guy doing animal shadow puppets for a group of kids. Only one kid recognizes the animals correctly and that was only due to the fact that her mother showed her a book about them. The others kept calling them out as the deadly mutants they knew(Dog was a lurker, elephant a nosilais, bird a daemon etc.)

Original music is very, very hard to promote - even when it's concerned with popular culture like many of my songs are. The upside is you tend to get a small but passionate audience. I love making tunes for you guys and communicating after to see what you all think of them :) That said... I would not say no to 2 million subscribers haha :D

Yep, I did most of this song in one take. I re-did certain lines (for example the' Once more we divide' at 3.26) which were lines I fucked up in the first take, but overall the song is just one long vocal take with no overdubs or layers.

I think it shows in the dynamics, my voice gets a little more strained and intense as the song goes on. If you guys like this approach I will be happy to use it more often :)

I listened to this with a thunderstorm going on well that was surreal.

Seriously, the way you say "The day the world died nothing was learned" makes me think of how true and sad that is in history~

8 years ago this song was released, and it saddens me how relevant it gets with every passing year

This sounds as if it is a song from the game's setting, something you'd hear around a small fire in a little corner in the Metro, by two people with a guitar and an accordion. Beautiful, beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

The Reich, The Reds, The bandits and the dead.
Fighting over a tunnel, a stroke of metal rails and concrete corridors.

*Dear Muscovites and guests to our capital!
The Moscow metro is a form of transportation which involves a heightened level of danger.*
-A notice in the metro.

Better than many professional musicians. I always get shivers when I listen to your masterpieces.

I remember when I heard this song first time. I was sitting and wondering how true these words were.
'The day the world died nothing was learned.' Yes, these words are painfully true.

This song feels like a part of the original soundtrack, and I can only say: THIS is talent.
You did not only get the tmosphere right, you captured the criticsmn the author gave in the books, which was also present in the game.

You deserve more than a like and a new watcher!

That second "The day the world died... Nothing was learned!" The, not exactly crack, but higher tone raises chills in my heart. Thank you for what you do!
