If I remember correctly, someone ran aerodynamics tests on various 40k flyers. The Eldar and Guard planes simply couldn't take off due to their shape, the Astartes gunships required nuclear levels of thrust to fly, and the Tau vehicles worked better as boats than aircraft. The Ork flyers, on the other hand, were actually comparable to modern fighter planes.
