Paul didn't prohibit females from the throne. The Pauline laws made it difficult for women to succeed, but every female was in the succession. They just came after every Male in the Male line. After all men in the Male line die out, then a female can inherit. This is evident amongst pretenders to this day. Nicholas II was also half way through abolishing the law so his daughters could succeed him. He didn't fully abolish it as Alexei was born. Also, very clever of Catherine to not help out in the American revolution, it was Louis of Frances downfall really. Supporting democracy would not make sense if you are an absolute monarch.

Catherine the Great is the reason why my ancestors landed in Russia from Germany. These immigrant Germans were known as Volga Germans, As this was the area the Czarina wish to have settled. Our village was Kratzke, Russia. One of many German villages along the Volga River. From there the families migrated to the USA. We settled in Russell County, Kansas.

Imagine if only Marie Antoinette had a modicum of Catherine's wit, she could have changed history and survived. I have always wondered what would have happened if Marie Antoinette had her husband taken care of and then usurped the throne. But she was not politically minded so I guess we will never know. I think Catherine was really wise. Although she knew slavery was wrong, she was hesitant on bringing the ire of the nobility against her. Plus, this will decrease her own wealth.
