A good day when there’s a new Pres video. Freeway capping is a great solution to a problem created in the past. Green space is a perfect way to re-connect previously separated neighborhoods! It also brings value to the communities surrounding the highways. The health effects of carbon released from car traffic and road noise can be mitigated while the green space provides a refuge from pollution, bringing cleaner air to cities, and a can even act as a destination to meet and bring people together. At least a lot more of of a destination than before, because I’ve never heard someone say meet me at the 8 lane elevated highway

Removing highways is very hard, and arguing against people with Stockholm syndrome for cars is tiring haha

It’s great to have you back! Luckily, my city of Madison, Wisconsin doesn’t really have much urban freeways, if any. However, there are still boulevards (like E Wash) that still make it really difficult for pedestrians.

This is definitely a conversation with I 94 in St Paul MN. It was built directly through the center of Rondo, a thriving black neighborhood because racism. There’s now talk of putting a lid over the freeway or even turning it into a boulevard, and I’m really hoping it happens.

Most of what you refer as a ' Belivard ' is termed by a growing number as a ' Stroad ', something trying to be both a means to get from point A-B and a destination, it succeeds at neither. Not friendly to the vehicles going through and not friendly to people trying to walk or bike.

Hey, you should check the Olympic Boulevard in Rio de Janeiro. It was build for the olympic games by demolishing a free way called Perimetral. Now it’s one of my favorite parts of the city, it’s just super beautiful, with museums and tramstations by the city harbor. 💙

bruh, when you said what freeway segment, I would like to see capped, I started looking in my city of Hartford, CT and I realized my city has already got plenty of perfect spots for putting a lid on and its perfect since we do have future plans to dig a tunnel

Kennedy Expressway (I-90, I-94) through downtown Chicago is awful. The worst part is the city is in the process of updating the many on and off ramps that massively increase the number of cars on surface streets in the West Loop. Makes walking around the neighborhood unpleasant. It needs a lid at the very least, but a better solution is to just get rid of it.

Super informative video. Really cool using skylines as a medium for this topic.

I remember the MCSG series from years ago. Crazy to see how far you’ve come 👍🏼

Hey Pres! Since you are someone who quotes Jane Jacobs and are familiar with her work I wanted to get your opinion on "high-rise" neighborhoods. I live in one in NYC right now (and another high rise in Chicago before that) and it's perfectly walkable, has beautiful and lively ground floors (restaurants, shops etc) and being in NYC there isn't much a car dependence (I never owned a car before in my life). I would say it's a type of neighborhood I enjoy for my personal tastes. Yet I do see a few of Jacobs' followers and new urbanists seem to be about capping the floor height to around 4-5 stories. I'm someone who agrees with the concepts of walkable and mixed use buildings and streets (and that we need more mid rises in general) but I love living in high-rise and high-rise neighborhoods that I believe can be planned just as well. I am fully aware you can get great density from just 5 stories but this is more about do you believe high rises and skyscrapers can be done well and be integrated with your concepts as an urban planning youtuber. Thanks!

The Embarcadero freeway in sf didnt collapse that was the 880 freeway. It was badly damaged and people wanted it got because they wanted a walkable waterfront

So what can we do for freeways that have parallel access roads with commercial/industrial active on either side? Removing the freeway still means barriers in the form of the access roads. Removing the access roads is too much disruption to local business... so the freeway seems to be impossible to remove. Add in high local temperatures and humidity that discourage walking and cycling, like in Dallas or Houston, and freeways have tremendous inertia. What to do, I wonder?

Just want to compliment you on this video concept. Using your own cities skyline content to support a key note talk is a great way to convey a message. At least it is for me.
