I would suggest when using the wicking trays to fill your beds with potting mix instead of garden soil. Garden soil usually contains larger pieces of organic material like bark creating some small air pockets that can affect the wicking process, or capillary action. Potting mix is more finely textured which increases the capillary action. It also helps to pre-moisten the potting mix. If you have already filled your beds with garden soil, you can mix in some amendments like peat moss or coir to improve the capillary action. Happy gardening!

How would I know when the reservoir is almost empty? Is there a drain to prevent overwatering?

The best mix for wicking is 30% coco coir, 30% peatmoss, 30% screened pine bark fines, & 10% perlite. Without the right mix the system will not function right.

I would like to know what you have put down for the base on your ground between the garden beds. It doesn't appear to be gravel.
