Sirius - the brightest star
Показать описание
Sirius (also known as the Dog Star) is the brightest star in the sky. This video explains why Sirius is so bright.
The brightness of Sirius made it a very notable object to ancient peoples and its predictable appearance each year in the early morning sky during the hot days of summer gave rise to the phrase Dog Days.
Sirius was discovered 1862 to have a faint companion star which we now know as Sirius B. Sirius B is an example of a extremely dense object called a white dwarf in which a mass similar to the Sun is squeezed into a volume of similar size to the Earth.
Sirius won’t always be the brightest star, for most of the past 4 million years this has been Canopus which once again will become the brightest star in 500 000 years’ time.
