I'm mainly a rap fan, so I'm not being biased about this.

The reason why rock music isn't the most influential is because they studied from 1960. Rock music had already made it's impact on mainstream music.

Had they looked at music from the last 100 years, rock music or blues would've probably come out on top.

I'm always skeptical of research done like this. How are they defining the music? What genres are they looking at? Are they at all aware of the underground music that is influencing pop every day? I don't see any mention of house, techno, or jungle, and they've been hugely influential to the pop music of the past 2 decades. Hip-Hop was influential, but nearly everything on the pop chart today is electronic dance music.

Hip hop has also exploded within the last 30 or 40 years while media and music outlets were growing bigger than ever. Not to mention inventions like the internet and iPods have helped along the way. Sure, the internet has given exposure to all genres of music, but most didn't have the advantage of being the popular music around the time of it's discovery. A lot of pop music today isn't that far removed from hip hop or still is hip hop so the results seem obvious. Ask the computer what music has most influenced modern rock? Dr. Dre or Jimmy Hendricks? It's kind of an apples to oranges comparison.

Angry whites complain but many don't know that even rock and jazz was a black created music genre. Blacks used to hum in the fields and create deep slow tunes, which when they were free became jazz. Jazz slowly became fast paced and loud like scat music. And that evolved into rock. Good rap that speaks true and from the heart was created by blacks as an upbeat powerful art form. not garbage rap like lil Wayne, eminem, (I know some white 12 year olds will be pissed about that one but it's true) Kanye, and big Sean. Yeah they can make rhymes, but they can't do it with heart and soul with good intentions. Ppl like 2pac, Kendrick Lamar, and kid cudi are truly deep and influential rap artists. So you see, most popular "American" music wasn't created by white Americans at all, it was created by blacks, and rap is the most influential, deep, revolutionary, and spiritual form of music in history.

err, did you just open this by comparing an entire genra to individual artists?

EDIT: after watching the entire video the reason is pretty obvious, hip-hop is the currently ascended mainstream sound for pop, had you ran this same program decades ago you would get the same response, the most popular of the particular time would be in the same place as hip-hop. this study only proves that music evolves and changes with the culture, nothing else. it literally says nothing.

Rap/hip hot isn't music, it's performance art.
Can you tell me what key they are "singing" in?
