Suggestion: get someone (with interesting Asian background) to take all the Asian tests and do a compare video when all the results come in. Probably a lot of folks would want to see that...

I have my mum and I on Wegene from when they were accepting free uploads and when I have the money to upgrade to the latest then I will. Their old algorithm broke my mum's Asian down a lot more than the other companies were offering at the time. Her Asian it broke down into.

Chinese 19.76%:
Naxi/Yi - 8.57%
Southern Han Chinese - 5.22%
Gaoshan - 4.33%
Dai - 1.28%
She - 0.33%

South Asian 6.52%:
Sindhi - 3.63%
Bengali - 2.71%
Indian - 0.17%

Southeast Asian:
Cambodian - 2.29%

Oceanian:
Papuan - 1.53%

Northeast Asian:
Japanese - 1.14%
Yakut - 0.11%

Compared to her AncestryDNA which on there her Asian is

Southern China - 16%
Southeast Asia - 2%
Northern Philippines - 2%
Southern Philippines - 2%
Southern India - 5%
Bengal - 2%

Will be interested to see what the updated results look like, they were pretty good for the Asian but not so great for the European or African sides.

I think the admixture can absolutely change identity. I was raised 100% ashkenazi Jewish but never looked that way. A DNA test showed that I was only 50% Ashkenazi Jewish and the remaining 50% was African American (40% West African and 10% NW Europe - mainly England).

With her strong Vietnamese ancestry, I wonder if that Southern Chinese DNA could really be Hmong.

Honestly after testing myself, dad, mom, and paternal grandma and paternal-paternal great uncle, I would say the ethnicity estimate is very hit or miss. If i didn’t have a well built family tree i would be very confused or mislead. They seem to have a lot trouble differentiating between certain areas even with a mostly European background. For example my grandma shows as 68% southern Italian meanwhile my dad has 0% (but he has more Greek and northern Italian), my great uncle is 43% Eastern European while my dad is only 1%. I have 53% Irish and 3% scottish meanwhile my dad has noting northwest of Germanic Europe. It’s like, how can we inherit more than what our parents have or inherit what they don’t even have. It comes down to their ability to read the DNA not being as concrete as some think.

It Does look like maybe the one parent is Vietnamese(47%)Southern Chinese(3%) = 50% and that the other parent is the Filipino with the European mix.

Hi, unrelated, but could you do a video on what it takes to be a genealogist ? (what studies and skills you need to have etc)

I've been told for years that I was Black, European, Irish, Scottish (from both sides), German and Native American (Maternally only). AncestryDNA did not pick up the Native American for both my mom and myself but the MyHeritage DNA did for myself and my son. My Ancestry also picked up the inuit roots from my son and my husband. Until you explained it, I didn't understand why. So thank you for explaining that.

So, he dropped the hint that his dad is Vietnamese ("his seed is stronger"), so his mother must be Filipino. And, with the knowledge that European is European is European (basically), all the readings could point to German and French, and the Japanese could be an error in the family lore. It would be good to look at someone who is Japanese and see how their DNA is analyzed to get a sense of how it works. That European DNA on his mother's side looks a lot like typical Yankee DNA, so my guess would be--especially with a likely great grandparent--an American soldier or official or capitalist post-Spanish American War. Could be a couple of 2nd great grandfathers.

There are fairly close historic contacts in Samoa, from Germany and China

Maybe there was a story of a Japanese ancestor from the Japanese occupation during WWII?

Hmm I not really seen Sweden reported as just Sweden but Sweden and Denmark for Ancestry but maybe.Regardless we should go back to that todays Germany has section that was under both Swedish and Danish control trough history. So I heavily suspect a lot of people that think they will gave German but gets Danish, Swedish and Norwegian (we all neighbor each other and has had a lot of interaction) have ancestors born in more modern Germany but might not been as close to the reference Germanic population today. (I guess we are back to getting people to understand what an admixture is)
