The balloon is only there to hold the piece in place until the mud is dry.

Easier to just screw some wood backer in

Why not use patch clips? I fell like that would be less time consuming, unless you were worried about screw heads.

There are always new ways to do the same job. But this is dumb. So I guess buy a hand held pump n a pack of balloons. If that don't work. Use a pack of Magnums and blow air into it.
