Tuners love potential and Volkswagen is one of those companies which provides it. There are lots of great engines on their account, petrol or diesel, but there is one which stands out a bit more the last couple of years... the 2.0 TSI EA888 series. Why is it so?

Luckily I'm driving an old Audi with an 1.8T 20V - Even tho it is 26 years old, it still feels like its been just built

I just let the car go, but I took my 2017 GTI to 262, 000 miles traveling all over the US. Mix of highway and fast paced backroad miles. Chased Porsches in several states. A week at WOT in 2nd-3rd gear at Tail of the Dragon and all kinds of stuff. 10, 000 mile oil changes, still original turbo. Pulled amazingly still and didn't use anymore oil than any other hardworking turbo engine (1qt every 3-4k miles).

I wake up my Ea888 too many times a day and she isperfect! Mk7 Golf R has been a pleasure to drive. Except for the water pump, but that was changed over two years ago!

I loved my 2017 S3 with hybrid turbo, and the EA888 is great. My only problem is the more power I made, the worse it sounded. I moved onto a B58 but the EA888 will always have my respect as one of the best modern 4 cyl

This engine is very popular here in Brasil most the gen 1's is modified a lot by tuners reaching 400 hp easily in golf's and jetta's

Love all the techs claiming the EA888 is unreliable but lumping all three generations together. The gen3 isn't the same engine. The only real weakness is the water pump. Early IS20 turbo cars and some IS38 cars had weak turbo's and later facelift MK7.5 had some direct injector issues, but that's about it. There is no other car that is as good a daily driver bang for the buck as the Golf R. You can do a few mods and make 500whp reliably, drive it year round, take 3 friends on a weekend vacation and fit a 65" TV in the box in the hatch.

The EA888 is a "successor" to the EA113 just as the EA113 was a "successor" to the EA827.

The EA888 is essentially the successor to the EA827 unit that debuted in 1974 in the original Golf with a displacement of 1.5 liters. Really, the EA888 is just a reworked version of the 827 unit, so was the EA113 and a few others. On the EA888 VAG made major changes to how the oil pump works and went with chains instead of timing belts, but the bore spacing is exactly the same on all these engines. They really are the same motor, just updated.

Great video!

Love the EA888 Gen3 on my S3. 52k miles Stage 2 FBO and it's been nothing but reliable. Can't wait to throw on a Garret turbo and see how much it can make!

I have Cupra with that amazing engine. Stock 300, tuned to 360 now. Amazing step in acceleration. Soon I'm doing stage 2 which includes bigger downpipe and intercooler which will give additional 40 hp.

Had two of them in a row. Fabulous powerplants. That's besides the VR-6 that I owned at some point as well which was another marvel of engineering. VWAG rulezzz!

I have 3'rd gen of this engine. Very nice to drive, doesn't drink a lot of fuel, and makes your car really fast.

I bought a Mk7 GTI new in January 2015 with the 3rd gen motor. I have 84, 000 miles on the car over 7 years of ownership It’s been perfectly reliable. Synthetic oil changes every 10, 000 miles and it runs perfect. People say VW’s are unreliable I’d disagree as their newer stuff is fantastic I’ve spent less than $1, 700 in maintenance over 7 years for my VW outside of tires.

I just now realized that I've had all the 3 different engines mentioned in this video, in order.
First I had a 1.8T 20V Seat Leon with 180hp
Then I changed it to a Audi S3 -09 with the EA113 engine
And now I have a sedan Audi S3 -16 with the EA888 gen3 engine, which is by far the best. Lowest turbo lag of the three, despite being fastest and least fuel consumption.

I know they get a lot of crap but my MK6 GTI has been nothing but reliable at 120k miles and being stage 2 for the past 70k miles. Love this car so much

1st and 2nd gen EA888 were some of the least reliable mass production motor VW has ever built. These engines need extensive work to keep them reliable. Oil consumption and timing chain issues are two of the main problems. These are just a few of them, I fix these cars almost daily.

I’ve had plenty of these, I find them to be very reliable when you actually use oem parts to maintain them💯

I have a Polo GTi 2.0 and there no denying the EA888 is the most superior engine not just made by VW but 2.0s in general

I own a Skoda Octavia RS with the EA888 Gen3 Engine and a Manual Transmission, it was factory tuned by ABT to 309HP, I've had it now 5+ Years, no Oil consumption up until now. Only if I drive hard on the unlimited German Autobahn high up in the rev range. It now has 220'000 km on the clock and so far no mentionable issues from the drivetrain. It's very efficient, uses only 7l of fuel when driven normally and only 6 Liters if driven conservatively per 100 km. A very good engine, that builds up boost very early (below 2000 rpm) and holds it up until the redline (6200rpm). I now changed the ridicolusly high oil change interval from 30tkm to 15tkm and changed the Transmission-Oil. I hope it will last me for another few years to come! I can confirm, the EA888 Gen 3 a very good all-round performing engine 🤗
