Paris finally got to play itself as hosts to the Olympic Games once more after been a century, staging the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad from 26 July to 11 August 2024. At this moment, the French capital - which previously held the Olympics in 1900 and 1924 - became only the second city to have hosted the Summer Games three times, following the footsteps set by London, which did so in 1908, 1948, and 2012.

In the wake of multiple withdrawals that left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention, the IOC approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Olympiads to the two remaining candidate cities, with Paris preferring to get the 2024 Games and LA, on the other hand, getting the next edition four years later; both of the bids were praised for high technical plans and innovative ways to use a record-breaking number of existing and temporary facilities. These decisions were officially ratified by the IOC at its 131st session in Lima, Peru on 13 September 2017.

Attracting 10,500 athletes from 206 nations competing in 329 medal events in 32 sports, the Paris Olympics were deemed 'Wide Open' to many across the globe with some of Paris' most recognizable landmarks played their roles at the Games, from beach volleyball at the base of the famed Eiffel Tower to urban sports at the Place de la Concorde, and a spectacular opening ceremony that took place through central Paris along the majestic River Seine. Hence its motto 'Games Wide Open', the Paris Games marked a welcome-back celebration in a time when normalcy in sport returned after the COVID-19 pandemic that was thought to be over.

Still in this very much polarized era, there were numerous concerns and challenges in the Games' build-up, from uncertainties and concerns over the Seine's role in the Olympics despite the polluted waters of the river, to hot debates regarding the inclusion of nations involved in wars such as Russia and Belarus in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Israel in spite of the country's offensive on Gaza.

Victor le Masne, who would serve as the musical director of both Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies, has composed the official musical soundtrack for the Paris 2024 Games - entitled "Parade". The theme was performed live for the first time on 8 May 2024, upon the arrival of the Olympic flame in Marseille aboard the yacht Belem.

It kicks in around 1.27. It's deliciously kitschy like all good sports themes should be. Glamourous, European, Superb.
