I finished reading this series last week after a Goodreads friend recommended it to me, and I totally agree with your review on this book!! If dumb/bad choices weren't made, the story wouldn't have progressed much. I felt that the characters did wanted they wanted to do and didn't worry about the consequences until later. IMO, book 2 read the same for me as book 1... more dumb/bad choices to push the story along though it was slightly more exciting than book 1. Having said that, I loved book 3. It was action packed until the end. Great review! Looking forward to your thoughts with the other books when you get to them.

I agree with most this review.

Half way through the book I looked up the author to see if she writes young adult novels, which she does. This isn't a bad thing but it is evident in her writing style. It's not bad, but it is a bit simplistic. The simplistic style matches the pace of the story so it wasn't out of place or distracting.

I suspect that the novel had too much violence or blood to be marketed to YA and so was marketed as adult.

I wasn't crazy on the first book when I first read it but now I kind of remember it fondly haha. I haven't continued the series yet but I'm definitely curious.

Dark Matter was a fun multiverse book. That and Recursion. Personally liked Dark Matter more. Scfi more than fantasy compared to this for sure.

I bought Vicious recently and am excited to start something by VE Schwab, I have heard good things about her writing. Ooo you have me intrigued when you said there are terrible people in Vicious!?

Everyone is talking really good things about the third book. I highly agree with what you said about the characters. We don't really know anything about them. And I still don't and I'm half through the second book. I liked A Darker Shade of Magic much more than I'm liking A Gathering of Shadows. I'm about 100 pages left to finish and just don't feel motivated. Despite really wanting to read the third. I really want to know what happens. But the second book it's just not happening for me. I'll probably give it a 3/5, while I don't remember, but I probably gave a 4/5 for ADSOM.

I'm glad you at least liked this book. I loved it. I just loved the world sooo much. I have the second one, I actually pre-ordered it but I haven't read it yet! ha. Silly me. I had one really big problem with this book though, and every time I ask people about it, they get mad at me, because it's something they never thought of until I brought it up and then they too realize that it's like... I dunno, a bit of a plot hole? Ha. they're like: "DAMMIT! I didn't even think of that! You're right! Why would they do that?"
But maybe you caught something in the story that others didn't and maybe you have an answer...

SPOILERS BELOW! NO ONE CONTINUE READING IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK!

Ok so my problem with this book was that it didn't make ANY sense why the two white london royalty people (I forget their names) gave the item (stone? was it a stone? I read it so long ago haha) to that person knowing that Kel would take it. Why would they purposely make sure that Kel left white London with it, and then be like: "KEL! GIVE IT BACK!" and run after him trying to get it back? Makes no sense.

UNLESS the stone needed to be in all the Londons before its magic could work. And giving it to Kel and then chasing him would hopefuly ensure that he takes it with him to all the Londons while he's trying to hide/get away. That was my reasoning for it, but that's never mentioned in the book. And when I told my friend that theory, she was like: "it doesn't say that in the book." and made me feel all dumb for saying it haha.
There is also a chance it's explained in the second book, but I doubt it since the white London royalty people died. Didn't they? Uh oh. I don't even remember.
Anyway that's my long comment.
