making this video was torture. some of the ambience noises play when you’re deep in the vastness of the ocean in minecraft :)
ALSO! yes i know the shark isn't an animatronic! i didn't think it through when i added it to the video

most images were taken off the subreddit r/submechanophobia, or just from googling "underwater animatronics".

Some facts about Rosie, the great white shark. She was caught by a family, already dead, and was purchased by the reserve. She was then preserved in a tank with formaldehyde for display. She was living at all being there. A great white shark is unable to live in captivity. She is just an abandoned, preserved corpse.

I think these things are scary because no matter how man made they look, there is still the element of being partially hidden. If you see an animatronic that's fully visible, you can understand better that it's just a robot that is stuck in one position. But having the legs hidden from you makes it seem like it can strike at any moment. basically, caveman brain says "can't see all of predator. must go apeshit"

0:22 scared me the most. The way it was deteriorating, and the sound fits perfectly. Plus the dark and sad environment. This image tells a story of betrayal and abandonment. Pretty creepy stuff.

This is a mix of:

-Thalassophobia: fear of the deep sea/waters and the creatures lurking in them

-Automatonophobia: fear of manmade, antropomorphic objects such as dolls and animatronics

Submechanophobia isn't relegated to only animatronics, it's any manmade object underwater. It can be abandoned submarines, ships, propellers, etc.

But this video in particular is very eerie, because that things *shouldn't be there.*

i’m not scared of their appearance it’s when i think “what if they have a whole body that we can’t see because of the deep dark water” and them touching you in dark water or accidentally swimming face to face with one of these massive animatronics is what scares me

i could be wrong, but i think the shark at 1:36 is rosie. she was a great white shark living at an australian wildlife preserve but when they abandoned the place they left her there to die.

What makes this terrifying is that they look so big and realistic, like they could jump out and eat you.

1:33 this one is my favorite. Dont have this fear but that sound effect with the blurry silhouette of a giant shark lurking around is pretty scary lol. The sound really invokes the primal fear you would feel when noticing that shape in the water with you.
