Biden Reiterates Pride in Son Hunter Despite Recent Charges

'I'm very proud of my son' — President Biden quickly addressed the news that his son Hunter would be pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax charges, while speaking at a technology event in California.

The charges and the guilty plea are the culmination of a 5-year investigation into Hunter Biden's conduct by the DOJ. Hunter, who is in recovery from drug addiction, also agreed to enter a pretrial diversion program in connection to separate felony firearm charges.

As a Senator, Joe Biden was one of the main sponsors of the 1994 crime bill, which included provisions that established harsher penalties for drug offenses and mandatory minimum sentences for certain crimes involving firearms.

Regarding the penalties for having crack and a firearm, the 1994 crime bill established a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for a first-time offense of possessing five grams of crack cocaine, and a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison for a first-time offense of possessing ten grams of crack cocaine. Additionally, the bill imposed a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for anyone who used or carried a firearm during a drug trafficking offense or a crime of violence.

Critics of the bill argue that these provisions unfairly targeted communities of color, as crack cocaine use was more prevalent in these communities and the harsher penalties disproportionately impacted them.
