Celtic Soul Extra: Jay Baruchel and Eoin O'Callaghan visit Brendan Behan's statue in Dublin. Brendan Behan was an Irish poet, writer, and playwright born in Dublin, Ireland in 1923. Behan's autobiographical novel, Borstal Boy, was a worldwide best-seller upon its release in 1958.

Celtic Soul follows Canadian actor and funny man Jay Baruchel on an epic road trip through Canada, Ireland and Scotland with his new friend, well-known Irish soccer journalist Eoin O’Callaghan. It’s a story that spans 200 years of colorful history and that will take the duo eastward from Montreal to Westport, Ireland – where Jay’s ancestors set sail for Canada, like so many others – and finally Glasgow, where Jay will fulfill a lifelong dream: to watch a match at Celtic Park, one of the wildest and most hallowed grounds in world football.

Eoin O'Callaghan: What I think of Dublin I think of Behan. He's just that like stereotypical Dubliner.

Jay Baruchel: And what does that entail, stereotypical Dubliner? Does that mean a sort of harder than usual? A chip on your shoulder? What does it mean?

00:00:19
Eoin O'Callaghan: It’s the entire package. It’s the accent, it’s the attitude, it’s the energy. As well as that I mean he fits into that kind of group of immensely intelligent, astute Irish literary figures.

00:00:33
Eoin O'Callaghan: His famous quote that I love is: I'm a drinker with a writing problem.

Jay Baruchel: *Laughs* That's right.

00:00:45
Jay Baruchel: There he is. This sculpture was commissioned by Dublin City Council and unveiled by An Taoiseach?

Eoin O'Callaghan: Taoiseach. That’s it, yeah you got it.

Jay Baruchel: OK and was unveiled by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD and the lord mayor of Dublin councillor Royston Brady on the 8th December 2003. Sculptor John Cole.

00:01:08
Eoin O'Callaghan: He was 41 when he died.

Jay Baruchel: Jesus Christ yeah. Well he was famously healthy.

00:01:14
Eoin O'Callaghan: Never touched a drop. A very fit man.

Jay Baruchel: He was known as a health nut, right?

Eoin O'Callaghan: Yes, fruit juices.

Jay Baruchel: Grape nuts, yogurt.

Eoin O'Callaghan: Quinoa salad I think was his favorite.

Jay Baruchel: Big mountain biker

Eoin O'Callaghan: Loved the outdoors.

Jay Baruchel: Like whatever you see in a yogurt commercial.

Eoin O'Callaghan: Mountaineering.

00:01:32
Eoin O'Callaghan: Yeah so there is. Breathe him in.

Jay Baruchel: I think someone egged him. And bird shat on his head.

00:01:37
Eoin O'Callaghan: This is Behan when he came to Montreal in the early 60s: “Predictably, Behan found the vibe on the company in an area notorious for rough bars, prostitution, DOS houses, and 15 cent movie theaters much to his liking. Indeed, he shocked the journalists who later asked him for his thoughts about Montreal by eulogising ‘The Main’, describing the characters he met there as fine citizens and denouncing those who believe otherwise, as bigots and snobs.

00:02:03
Jay Baruchel: Atta boy. So big up on ‘The Main’. That’s where Leonard Cohen comes from. Atta boy Brendan.

00:02:10
Eoin O'Callaghan: So without this guy, no Shane McGowan, no Pogues, no Borstal Boy, no tales of rabble rousing, bringing your international wonderments across the world.

Jay Baruchel: No shit.

00:02:22
Jay Baruchel: He could use a bath, though, right now.

Eoin O'Callaghan: I think as he could have done for most of his forty years on the planet.

Jay Baruchel: You think? You don't think he was a real shower Nazi?
