Why Open Dam Gate #shorts

Показать описание
Why do dam sluice gates need to be opened periodically? Dam sluice gates need to be opened regularly to control the flow of water and prevent flooding during heavy rain. you see, Over time, sediment such as mud and sand will accumulate at the bottom of the dam and settle, gradually raising the dam's bottom. this increasing sediment deposition can endanger the dam structure if not cleaned regularly.

that "water stream" could at any point contain rocks or other debris that might turn your hand into a stump if you were to tempt fate like that kid at the end of this.

Remember kids, they can use high pressure water to cut through steel.

Lesson of the day: Do not volunteer unless you know the exit plan.

I’m almost finished with my geology degree, and we learned this semester about the drawbacks of major dams. As mentioned they collect sediment—a ridiculous amount of it. The sediment would otherwise be flowing out to the ocean at the end of the stream and maintaining the beaches. Retreating beaches suck but the worst part is actually that dams raise the water table SIGNIFICANTLY, and more often than not the contractors don’t check with hydrologists to make sure the bedrock of the mountains on either side of the water can cope with that. Tens of thousands have been killed in dam overflow accidents where saturated hillsides collapsed into the dam causing a mini-tsunami.

Imagine getting completely degloved, your whole hand, because you wanted to stick your hand in a high velocity dam release. Ouch.

That dam gate valve doesn't even have a redundant valve in series, in case the other valve is damaged. They really trust that single valve.

But I wanted my flesh to be shredded from my arm 😢

It's called exercizing that valve.
Valves will close due to that mentioned sediment.
So they actually open them to make sure they operate correctly.
Because if they needed to open and or close them and they did not work.that would be a disaster

Additional pipes must be connected. Away from the building so that the structure does not wash away with the flow of water. This is one of the safety standards, may God protect you from all danger

"Hey friend, watch me put my hand in this dam sluice gate!"
"OH SHIT WHERE IS MY HAND" ☠️

Watched this several times in disbelief at these men doing this job with no ropes or harness 😮

Gosh damn I didn't think there were any damns this size with manual gates. That's a risky ass job opening those gates.

All valves should be exercised regularly to ensure they will work when needed. The pressure of water at the bottom of a dam depends on the height of water behind the dam.

Once the water exits the valve, there is no more pressure. It’s the velocity that you need to worry about.

My toxic trait is me believing I can take on the full force of a sludge gate like Thor does to the heart of a dying sun.

Yes, but there should be a motor on the gate allowing it to be opened and closed remotely!

At the base of the Hoover Dam, outside Las Vegas, are huge catfish. Some measure over eight feet. Sometimes divers who are hired to clean the intake grates come up and quit on the spot. They are that afraid of the fish.
NB: there has never been an occasion of one of the catfish attacking a diver.
