Why New York Nurses Went On Strike

Nurses in both the U.S. and U.K. flexed their bargaining muscle over the last few weeks amid increasing pressure on the countries’ respective health care system due to COVID-19. About 7,000 nurses from two New York City hospitals, Mount Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, have been on strike since Monday.

These hospitals are making a fortune on staffing shortages. I have worked in places with practically no staff shortages and it had everything to do management from the top. CEO’s are the health care system’s worst enemy.

It’s happening all over the country. Safe staffing and patient ratios is at crisis levels and it’s the patients that ultimately suffer. The hospitals cannot retain nurses because they put their licenses at risk every shift. Respect, pay and appreciate your nurses so you can keep them. Stop putting profits over people and patient safety

This isn’t just with Nursing. Hospitals keep their facilities short staffed in every department on purpose. Even at psychiatric hospitals. Northwell Health needs to hire many more therapists, RN’s, psychiatrists, Psych NP’s etc. It’s too overwhelming it’s partially why I left to go into private practice.

Give em hell nurses. Burn the whole system to the ground. And also, let's be clear here. There is absolutely NO STAFFING SHORTAGE. The "staffing shortage" drum that companies and employers LOVE to beat is a complete total myth. Almost every single of these staffing "shortages" are totally, artificially created, meaning that the companies and employers currently experiencing these "shortages" have nobody else to blame but themselves. That's what you get when you deliberately understaff hospitals to dangerous, skeleton crew levels in the name of pleasing your shareholders. Hospitals have no right to complain or God forbid play the victim.

I am a nurse in long term care and I can't give quality care with a 30 patient unit to one nurse ratio. I don't think LTC should have no more that half that a day.

Nurses are leaving the profession in droves because not only is the pay substandard, patient lives and our licensees are constantly placed at risk due to ridiculous patient ratios. Meanwhile these multimillion (billion) dollar insurance/hospital systems continue to profit without being held accountable.

Greedy executives earn millions a year and the working hard floor nurses earn 1% of the profit a year divided between all the nurses. 1%

It's not only the nursing staff shortage it's also administrative as well. I been in medical field 22 years and it's the worst career choice I made. It's consistently getting worse and the CEOs make millions in profits. I regret thinking it was a good career choice when I was younger
