Where Should I Print My Zines?

Where should you print your zine? In this video I discuss the do's and dont's of printing through local print shops. How to find print shops near you, and how to approach a print shop with your zine project.

At the time of making this video, I do not have any copies available of either zine mentioned for sale. Reprints may happen in the future, however there are no guarantees that any of the projects will have another run of prints.

Print Shops in Grand Rapids I've used:
(Both have confirmed that they can take out of city orders if for whatever reason you cannot find a shop near you)

:: Perrigo Printing ::
125 Ottawa Ave NW #160, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Crop Marks Printing ::

Hey Guys! Excited to bring you this highly requested (and caffeinated) video on where to go to print your zines. This is by far the biggest question I get about zine making, and rightfully so. Locating a printer to go through can be half the battle at times. However, over the past couple years working through the different zines I've printed and sold, I learned some do's and don'ts within the print industry. I hope these tips and tricks serve you as well as they have served me and the handful of individuals I walked through the process in the past. I hope to see plenty more zine coming out in 2019 and beyond! I would love to hear about any projects you are currently working on, or any other questions you guys have about the zine making process here in the comments! As always, I'm no expert, but I am here to serve in any way I can. Cheers -NRM

I recommend to talk to architecture students. At least in Germany they need to print booklets and other stuff on a regular basis in high quality. They sure know the best place to go in town :)

I learned more on this 15 mins video on zine printing than a whole year quest on the rest of the Internet

You’re right! I’ve lived in this fairly small town for 25 years and never heard of a print shop in the area. I just did a quick Google search and there were three, two of which I’ve passed by many times but never knew what they did based on their storefronts (print shops evidently aren’t very good marketers). Thanks for the tip!

I couldn't agreee more with the content of this vid. I went local for the two zines i made so far, and it was much fun working with locals and profit from their knowledge, aswell as a lot cheaper than the trials i made through Blurb at first.
Glad to see you back rocking the youtube channel brother !
Peace

Nick, this is all very helpful and instructional. I am about to make my first zine and am a little intimidated by the process. I have studied your other videos on the subject and am slowly getting the hang of what it is I want. And yes, the idea of having work in hard copy is very exciting. Thanks for all of this.

Love these tips Nick !!!

As for print shops people some examples are FedEx Office, The UPS Store, Staples, Office Depot, Office Max…I know for sure The UPS Store and FedEx Office can do it ….. every place that can print your stuff may not necessarily have “print shop” in the name.

Brilliant video, Nick. I really appreciate how transparent you've been here about your mark ups. Of course that's not the purpose of this video, but it helps to understand why you make such decisions as folding each copy, for example. I definitely have a few things I could share about my experience in the UK, if anyone needs assistance with that.
Side-note: the video production on this video is another level. Small tweaks, but I'm a massive fan. Kudos!

This video was informative and has inspired me to get off my butt and start the process of creating my own zine. I have the content/project and layout, I just need to stake the first step so thanks Nick for pointing me into the right direction.

great practical advice- makes it sound a realistic prospect- the one-offs done so far have been prohibitively expensive- thanks
