RDJ Coming Back to the MCU... WHY?!

As you have all heard by now, Robert Downey Jr. who we know and love as the face of the MCU for years with his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man is making his RETURN to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Dr. Doom. As announced at Marvel's Hall H Panel at SDCC, he will star in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars--films directed by none other than the Russo brothers. I think it can be good in two ways

1) if they don’t show his face, which just confuses me as to why they cast him

2) if he’s a Tony stark variant. Yes, that would essentially be erasing viktor von doom, but it’s the right step for the mcu imo to have an evil Tony.

I freaking love it!!! The fact that he is playing Doom is incredible, and it won’t diminish his heroic sacrifice at all since he’s playing a whole new character! Here’s what I would prefer though when casting him as Doom and I hope they do this: I want his Doom to be an alternate version of Tony. In other words: make it like instead of becoming Iron Man in this universe, he became Doom. Also, I hope they build up to Doom just like they did with Thanos. Don’t just throw Doom in Avengers 5 out of nowhere like they did with Kang. That was one of my biggest complaints with Kang, there was no build up whatsoever.

I love the idea of RDJ coming back. And the MCU is gonna do a little soft reboot after secret wars with Mutants

I actually think it can work. Marvel needed a quick pivot after the Kang fiasco and while this is definitely not going to be liked by everyone I’m willing to give them a chance. The Russo brothers could definitely pull it off.

On the new Avengers team not yet being established - I fully expect this to be resolved in the new Cap movie (they talk about it in the trailer). I don’t think we need 5 years to set up the next big storyline. They have already wasted the time since Endgame and people aren’t going to stay interested for that long. I think Cap and the Fantastic Four can set it up well.

Ultimately, it will all depend on how well everything is executed. Could be terrible, could be great. We will see, regardless I’m excited to find out!

I'll probably hate it but if they'll do it like tony stark is still alive but something reached his brain or something then he comes back as a villan then it might be good

I personally think he can do a great job if he does it correctly. I wouldn't quite call it a desperate move by Marvel per se. Because what if they brought back one of the other mcu, actors. For the sake of a variety of characters, I would have picked an actor that we haven't seen in the Marvel cinematic universe yet. I do agree, though, that there is a possibility that this could be a variant of Tony Stark who becomes Doctor Doom. Because it is the multiverse saga.

I don't think he's coming back as Iron-Man perhaps, maybe it's just a completely different character but with Robert Downey Jr. as the actor because the fans love him so much. I think Iron-Man is still dead and always will be.

Couldn’t have said it better! I just wish we were able to get a proper Dr doom because he is such a good character. It looks like he’s just going to be a Tony stark variant.

i actually dont mind it ill be hyped when they show us how they are going to do this like is it a ironman variant or the actual dr doom i hope its the first one and he is not the main dr doom for the fantastic four hopefully it will be good

Understanding the firing of Johnathan Majors has derailed the original plan, this move by Marvel does keep the fans buzzing almost making us forget about Kang The Conqueror. However, I agree that this move feels desperate. I’ll try to keep an open mind as well.
