Manual machinery has always interested me. I’ve used the Precision Matthews PM-949TV Precision Mill, PM-1440GT, and TL-1660 on a variety of projects and they’ve served me well. While I still use these lathes, I needed something more—enter the PM-1440HVT-2. Check out how I set it up in this video!

Nice!

Gave me flashbacks from my teens and my Dad showing me the Gisholt turret lathe he operated to put my brother and I through college. Long hours and overtime working for GTE/Noth American Philips.

God Bless his German Work Ethic!

This is exactly the videos I needed as I get my new Grizzly set up. The exploratory learning has been interesting, and expensive, but thankfully not destructive.

I just bought and set up a 13x36 lathe in the back of my garage. But it is 80+ years old, so the set up procedure involved scraping years of accumulated sludge off, but not cosmoline! It was 3 phase, so I added a VFD. I've done a basic leveling, but the machinists level will have to wait for a future paycheck....

VERY NICE!!! I have plans in 2024 to add a baby brother, the 1340GT, to my shop. That’s in all likelihood as big as I’ll go or need…or not. 😅

Do not wear gloves around a rotating lathe. That goes for those thin latex ones as well.

Its great to see someone talk about setting up a lathe. We just had 9 cnc's leveled and set up 2-3 weeks ago in our shop 👍

Your new setup looks a lot simpler, the super fine accurate level helps.

Makes my old Southbend heavy 10 look like something that came over on the Mayflower.🤣
Those are some beautiful machines you have. One day I'll put the H10 to rest and my budget will let me.

I've been looking at lathes and mills for 10+ years now... I've toyed with the idea of the smaller "mini" options on the market, but fear I will regret spending between $500 and $2000 only to find (in short order) that I should have gone straight for the PM1440HVT Lathe. I'm still not fully funded for such an acquisition, but I can plan. On that note, I don't see any space requirements or dims on the PM website. Do you have access to this information? I'm planning to add a second 50A outlet for the future installation. As an aside, thanks for the great, informative content!

Any need for a thin high density rubber under the leveling feet? To avoid vibration?

Need to get you a 5C collet quick change for the spindle.

I think I would have went ahead and gotten with some CNC capability. I get it. Pretty useless for most gunsmithing but it sure is handy to have some ProtoTrak type conversational capabilities.

Gavin, a question. What about cutting chamber inside a separate, removable piece of metal. This way I could chamber and shoot either British 303 or 7.62x54. They have identical projectiles and almost identical powder charge.

I never noticed this until now, but there is no chip drawer? Looks like you have to remove the chips from the backside of the machine? If so, this seems problematic if you need to put the thing near a wall.

Gavin that thing looks super short! Is it shorter statured than the 1440gt???

Where did you get the backsplash mount for the centers? Or did you make it?

How long did it take to get yours? Ours has been on order for about a year and a half. The first one was on a truck that rolled, so we are still waiting.
