Born on November 10, 1919, Mikhail Kalashnikov was a tank mechanic in the Soviet Armed Forces during World War II. He was wounded in action when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, and was transferred to the weapons development sector.

On the battlefield, he closely observed the superiority of the German weapons, and decided to create a better weapon. Production of the AK-47 rifle was started in 1947.

The weapon quickly spread around the world, being adopted by Warsaw Pact member countries, becoming a symbol of revolution in countries like Vietnam, Afghanistan, Colombia, and Mozambique, where it has a prominent position on the country's flag.

Despite its invention becoming increasingly common in the hands of terrorists and radicals, the inventor said that he only created it to defend his country, and that he had no responsibility for how politicians used it.

Mikhail Kalashnikov was decorated a hero of Russia in 2009, lived for 94 years, and although the AK-47 rifle sold over 100 million units worldwide, his biggest source of income came from a vodka that bears his name.
