Like... 8 months into blender. Learned modeling. Learned rigging. Learned sound. Learned animation. Finally... Finally!!! I have a way of viewing without spending 10000 years rendering .2 seconds of test. Should have googled this one earlier! Would have saved a ton of time.

The viewport also respects Transparent Background for capturing an Alpha Channel. Just turn ON Transparent under Render Properties->Film.
I love this for capturing a quick Material Shaded or Matcap view, so I don't have to mess around with lights and render settings.

This is great and useful. My issue is that the viewport shading is way different than the final render, which is flat.

the key was changing output settings to video, which I would not have assumed controlled the 3d preview render but hey, it only took me about an hour to find this video

Thanks for the video Steven, how do you get away from the black blank screen in the render doing this. Is this to do with the overlays and which you should use.
