PROTECTIVE DEVICES - PART 1 – FUSES – DIFFERENT TYPES AND WHY WE HAVE THEM - WHY A FUSE BLOWS

This LearnElectrics video was originally intended to be just one short video about all the protective devices together, but I soon realised that there is so much information to get over, that one video on its own just isn’t enough.
Especially if you are new to the trade or, on an apprentice scheme, you need to go through these devices in a way that improves your understanding and skills. Expect to be asked questions and demonstrate your understanding in assessments and exams.

So, this will be part one of a short series and we will start with fuses and work our way through the different protective devices over the next few weeks.

Some frequent comments have included things like …
What is a fuse, what does it do?
What types of fuses are there and are they interchangeable?
And just what is the point of a fuse?

To view all of our videos type in LearnElectrics all one word into the YouTube search bar.

This is video No.176 on our YouTube channel where we have videos on a wide range of electrical topics.

Another great video and it is important to know what type and size of fuse that is used. As electrics seem to be going more into electronics fuses are very commonly found. As a maintenance electrician in a industrial plant I had fuses from .100 ma to 600 amp for lower voltages ( 5 volts to 600 volts) and 1 amp to 100 amp high voltage (14, 400 to 24, 000 volts) fuses as well. Thanks for the video.

excellent explanation and this is the first time someone has referred to electricity as either energised or de energised. IS de energised electricity still got a voltage though to push it back to the transformer and become energised.

Hello thanks alot for your informative videos. I have really learnt alot from you. There is a video you talked about shared neutral. My question is in most homes here in kenya you find that all neutral are from consumer unit neutral bar. Can we categorise neutral bar in consumer unit as part of shared neutral if not why. Kenya electricity we use 240V single phase and 415V three phase just like UK. 5hz frequency
