“The roads go without saying, don’t they!?”

That part always gets me.

"The aqueduct?" is one of my favourite line deliveries in anything anywhere.

Even back then, men spent their time thinking about the Roman empire

My History 101 teacher sent us this as part of teaching about Roman assimilation because he said it perfectly captures the tension of losing one’s culture against the practical benefits of Roman rule.

"They certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it, they're the only ones that could in a place like this."

John Cleese's talent for unbridled rage is extraordinary.

The very first guy chirping up with "the aqueduct..?" in that totally innocuous voice really sets the stage for everything that's about to happen.

Monty Python were the absolute kings of blending hilarious humour with brutally honest truths.

This is something Sun Tzu talked about in The Art Of War; that you shouldn't be too harsh to your captured enemies/territories lest they be hostile to you later. Sometimes the best way to defeat your enemy is to demonstrate how much better things are when YOU win.

The coolest thing about Python's influence is being able to sit in a business meeting today, get asked a similar question, answer with "the aqueduct", and have half the room rollin' on the floor.

Some Roman built roads are still in use 2, 000 years later, amazing

One of the most poignant, thought-provoking scenes of any Monty Python movie.

the irritated look on Cleese's face, wanting ever so badly to be ungrateful, is priceless 😄😀😆

it's both humorous and soul destroying how relevant this still is.

My history teacher put this on so we knew what the Romans gave Britain

"Well, apart from the sanitation, medicines, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

lol

John Cleese's face at 0:59 is probably the best piece of acting he's ever done.

My Archeology teacher called this sketch sadly one of the only accurate depictions of the Romans on film. Sad because no other has done it better.

"Brought Peace"

"Oh, PEACE? Shut up!"
