Guilbeault says Conservatives doing 'stupid things' amid oil, gas emissions cap pushback

Minister of Environment Steven Guilbeault said in Ottawa on Monday that Alberta’s “scrap the cap” campaign against the federal government’s proposed cuts to the oil and gas sector is “more hot air” and disinformation by the Conservative Party.

“Whether it's Pierre Poilievre, whether it's Danielle Smith, whether it's Scott Moe, pretending that climate change isn't happening in the face of mounting climate impacts and dramatic impacts on the lives of Canadians — but also costs to the Canadian economy — they will continue doing stupid things,” Guilbeault said.

Responding to a reporter’s question about his confidence in being able to work together with Alberta and Saskatchewan after calling them “stupid,” Guilbeault responded with: “I didn't call them stupid, I said they were doing stupid things. There's a difference.”

In Edmonton, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said that Guilbeault was “absolutely not” helping Canadians and accused the environment minister of having a “deranged vendetta” against Alberta. “Somehow he thinks he’s going to sneak one in and we won’t notice… Well, we’ve noticed,” Smith said.
