Silicon Bites - #37 - Russia's Aircraft Losses Increase Dramatically as Kyiv's Strategy Changes.

Ukrainian forces shot down the second Russian Su-34 attack plane in a single day on Feb. 27, the Air Force reported. The destruction of the jet is the latest in a recent uptick of downed Russian planes, including two A-50 early warning and control aircraft in the past two months, each costing around $330 million. There are signs that the uptick in aircraft losses has caused Russia to change its aerial strategy, reducing the number of sorties flown by Russia's Air Force, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in December 2023.

Ukraine reportedly downed a Su-34 on Feb. 21, a Su-34 and a Su-35S plane on Feb. 19, a Su-34 plane on Feb. 18, as well as two Russian Su-34 fighter jets and another Russian Su-35 combat aircraft on Feb. 17. Russia has lost around 340 planes since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on the morning of Feb. 27.

The key thing about shooting down the aircraft is not so much the replacement of the airframes, it is the replacement of the aircrews. In the case of the A50s, this includes senior officers, in addition to the airframes being out of production. In the case of the fighter bombers, it is the loss of experienced pilots.

Either way. replacement of experienced and highly trained personnel cannot be achieved by conscription. Even if the pilots survived ejection, that does not mean they are sufficiently unscathed to return to service.

There's multiple fronts to this war. The front line is being won by Russia if you consider momentum of land changing hands, who's winning. Arguably Ukraine is winning by making it costly for Russia. But the other two fronts the Black Sea and the long range weapon attacks Ukraine is hands down winning.

When General Zaluzhny wrote his op-ed that new technology would be necessary, he was obviously referring to drones. Since Zelensky has created this new branch of the military, I think it would be logical to place Zaluzhny in charge of this new branch of the Ukrainian military.

Zelenskyi mentioned a different figure for russian losses, 180K, which could be compared to our 31K (both for the killed in combat). 415K was the figure for both killed and heavily wounded given by our General Staff, but the president gave an estimate of 500K of total russian losses.
