Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how quantum physics, a theory created in the 1920's gave birth to the Information Age and digital computers. Tyson states that the practical applications of science are often not self evident. Determining science funding based on practical applications alone is detrimental to science.

We exploit quantum craziness to birth information technology revolution. There is no creation, storage or retrieval of information without an exploitation of the quantum. So and by the way, the quantum was discovered in quantum physics as a branch of physics was discovered in the 1920s. If you were around back then and your tax buddies don't like paying taxes, you, what would you have said? Why are you spending government money on the atom, and on molecules.

If you can't even see them, what good is it? Like I'm a woodworker. I just care about my wood atoms. Right. Here I am. Yeah. Yeah. Shove that where your where your tax dollar is. And so it would look like you're wasting your own time and everybody else's money. It would take decades, five decades, before you'd realize what role that would play in computing this creation, storage and retrieval of information. And by some measures, it's a third of the world's GDP.

Yes. The best one I heard as a kid.
My brother told me the govt spent a lot of money to find out how Flys could land on the ? Why?
He smiles and tells me because of
My brother was brilliant at teaching the value of seemingly unconnected things. RIP BRO

very clear explanation from Dr Tyson! I owe being able to save my files on ny hard drives and do internet banking because of theoretical physics from rhe 1920s! These theories took 50+ years to mature. And because of their work today I have a 2 terabyte hard drive that fits in my pocket.
A hard drive is only a box from the outside. The disks inside spin at 5, 400 rpm+. IF THAT THING WAS IN OUR SCALE..what the hard drive head is abke to do with bits and bytes could be compared to flying over a lawn at 200 mph one inch away from the surface of the lawn and at the same time and able to read, cut, or plant each and every single blade of grass as it flies over the lawn . Mind blown! Gotta go learn what they discovered in the 1920's that lead to this... totally Rad 🤙

He is absolutely awesome. Love watching him speak.

True. To understand solid state electronics (not even quantum computing), you need some quantum knowledge

That was a perfect representation of conservatism vs science. Why are my tax dollars being wasted on things I don't understand. 🤣

And now we get quantum computers coupled with AI any day now. It's going to get crazy when that happens.

Every person who complains about paying their taxes to “useless” scientific, or astronomic, or medical research needs to watch this

Government spending does occasionally, accidentally create good. We forget though what we could have done if we hadn't been taxed in the first place.

Quantum particles behave in a fascinating way, for instance they can be in 2 locations at the same time, they can also stay in communication with each other after touching each other (Quantum entanglement), And we've only just scratch the surface of the Quantum!

Surely exploitation of the quantum means everyone was working on quantum theory at the same time?

This is one of the only real valid points I ever seen him make😊

How is quantum “craziness” exploited in normal computing?

The difference is that quantum effects investigated in the 20s occurred at energies and scales that were much smaller in scale. Whatever comes out of the large hadron collider is likely to be unusable as a technology due to the ridiculous energies needed to create those events.
Also, they haven't seen anything that isn't explained by current theory.
