Why would you buy a Landrover Defender ?

Who does buy old fashioned Landrover Defenders, cars that are no longer build, not comfortable, not safe, not fast, not... not..... and yet....

So far it seems that many Landrover lovers hate this video, for the wrong reasons. It is not about placing the defender in a bad daylight, not at all as it is a vehicule build for a special purpose. The point is that many want to own one for the wrong reasons, and once they own one, they find out that the car has no real road performance and handling , no comfort, no safety, poor environmental measures etc... And off course that is so, but that is not why you should buy one. You buy a defender out of love for the mechanics and simple technology, its robustness, its terrain handling,etc.... things for which the car is made. And we gladly take all the not so good points. The sad thing is that those fancy people , who buy a Defender to show off, that never use it as workhorse are driving the prices up. To a point that they are no longer affordable for the people that want to use it for what it is ment.

Why would you buy a Land Rover Defender? Here are the top 3 reasons:

1. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
2. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
3. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender

So I can pull 3500kgs
So I can load it up with shit and not have to worry about the load bed rotting out as it's aluminium
So I can knock the aluminium panels about without worry about them rotting
So I can use it for camping trips with it loaded up with all my gear
So I can get about in bad conditions when the roads flood and the snow falls
So I can maintain it with simple tools and do it myself
So I can put a soft top on it in summer and hardtop in winter
So I can run a PTO winch from the gearbox
So I can wash the inside out with the hose when it's muddy from my work boots
So I can use it for my everyday vehicle
So I don't have to worry about paying hundreds for my insurance
I've had mine for 16 years now and it's covered 280000 miles and in my ownership it's let me down once with a clutch problem.
I'll keep it for the rest of my days and pass it on to my sons as it's part of the family.
You either hate them or love them!

This is the Defender review I've most wanted to see! No sugar coated, glossed over excuses! It's why we love this car! :)

In the uk the defender is the safest car on the road ie the lowest deaths per thousand accidents. Why ? You don't drive fast because your having so much fun driving it you don't want to arrive in a hurry. Most drivers see you coming and give way to you. You are more relaxed in a Landrover just listening to the engine and seeing over the hedges. It won't go fst and you won't get done for speeding very easily. Just buy one it will last you a lifetime.
More fun than any other vehicle. Phil

I'm fortunate enough to have a Hummer H2, a Jeep Wrangler and a Land Rover Defender 90. If I had to only keep one. It would always be the Land Rover Defender.

The other day I sat in an ex United Utilities 110. It was clean and tidy, low mileage and sounded great. As I relaxed, yes relaxed into the seat. A voice came into my head and it said. 'You are a thing of beauty and a tear came to my eye!!! How mad is that! What a Vehicle, I love them. No other car has ever done that to me. None!

I do love it when people slate old landrovers , why compare it to modern cars, i for one hate modern cars rubbish electrics that go wrong expensive and have to go to dealer to fix just like the lifeless cars of today .my 1988 landrover 90 is going strong and i love it its not fast i drive it carefully unlike todays motorist in euroboxes going around round abouts at 30 mph , and most euro cars have been scrapped after 7 to 9 years life after all a landy is an light utility l vehicle

My family had defenders when I was growing up. It rumbled, it had 3 seats in the front, it vibrated, and it had bench seats in the back. I remember going on a trip with one of my friends in a normal car, and it felt so smooth, quiet and low down, I felt like a peasant. It was so smooth that I could barely feel how fast I was going and it was horrible.

When the tables were turned and my school friends went in my landy, they loved it. Everyone was so excited to be in the back of that thing.

Agreed Sir, these simple cars have so much wrong with them compared to modern machines which do every thing for you, but it's the absolute character that captures your heart, its beautiful simplicity, plus if you buy one for the right reasons, it will be the best car you will ever buy, these cars become part of the family, unlike ordinary cars you change every few years

Owned Land Rovers for more than 50 years. You have given such an accurate descriptrion of the Defender TD5. No nonsense. You are spot on. Thank you.

After serving in the British Military for 10 years, I now wish I had bought one many years ago when I left in 1995. I now live in the US and regret the decision as they are way out of my budget since they ended production. The Landrover Defender definitely served its purpose, it runs forever and is a no nonsense vehicle. I would gladly give up my Ford Explorer for one any day (if it wasn't a company lease, dont think they would appreciate it as much as I would). Just have to wait for a rich uncle to pass before being a privileged Defender owner. Driving off road is the best, and through the desert is a breeze in one of these. Towing capacity is awesome and takes a bullet like a Vietnam movie hero. Has anyone bought an ex military version? With the white rear diff and small light to illuminate it for night driving convoys. This was a pleasant memory of driving through the desert during Desert Storm leading a convoy of 22, 500 liter fuel tankers to the bulk fuel installations.

Land rover defenders are built for off road and harsh environment conditions. So yea it drive like crap on the streets and gets bad gas mileage and doesn't have air bags but it's not built for comfort. It's built to get u where u need to go without having to use a helicopter.

I've got one and the reason why I bought one was because I hate car's, they either rust, or in the UK they need MOT's something we have to comply on the roads with here. Around here also you will still see plenty 30 year old Defender's still on the roads and yes they still have parts that rot away but the parts are easy to get hold of and the ability to fix them told me something, yes they have their problems especially the comedy steering every time I hit a pothole and the handbrake also too but there still around. I chose like your one a TD5 engined one becase the tune ability on them and because they have a timing chain which will last slightly longer compared to a belt, the other reason was I hope it outlast my driving licence, and I also like my tractors too especially my International 956xl, it's matches me perfectly too. Great video.👍
