How to Avoid Scooter Scams and Rental Tips Abroad
- Ask for a receipt for proof of payment. Sometime it is a different person at the till and you can avoid payment confusion.
- Be clear with the drop off time and terms. We like to ask if they can pick it up at our hotel when we are done for free
- Take pictures and/or videos of the bike before using it. We have heard of scams where they charge you for scratches that were already there. We have avoided this a couple times just by saying we took videos that scratch was already there.
- Get helmets. Even if you are a good driver, other drivers are crazy and it is worth it to wear a helmet
Many countries Police officers use not wearing a helmet as an excuse to pull you over and ask you to pay a "ticket"
- Go for a test drive and check the breaks, speedometer, fuel gauge etc.
- Always get their contact details. This is helpful for so many reasons. You want to keep the bike longer, their are issues, your break down, etc.
- Check the gas level. You can return it how you rented it
