Greater Strength: I-joists are made from engineered wood products that have greater strength and stiffness than traditional lumber. This allows for longer spans and wider joist spacing, which can reduce the number of joists needed and lower the overall cost of the project.

Consistency: I-joists are manufactured to precise specifications, which means that they are consistent in size, shape, and strength. This makes them easier to work with and reduces the likelihood of structural problems.

Reduced Deflection: I-joists have a lower deflection (bending) than traditional floor joists, which means that they are less likely to sag or flex over time. This can lead to a more stable and durable structure.

Wider nailing surface, which helps provide rigidity to the flooring system and makes the installation less prone to mistakes.

From a firefighting standpoint, not at all. The glue holding them together liquefies at a relatively low temperature causing them to fail and collapse early on in a fire where as traditional framing lasts longer and gives you a better chance of getting out.

Might be old but I wouldn’t be able to trust OSB for framing.

Anecdote: almost 20 years ago I used to work for a roofing company. After a hurricane we went around pulling trees off houses for free and tarping them in. We had a flatbed with a crane. I was young so I was walking around structural disasters nailing tarps to roofs. Anyway, you could tell how old the house was by how far the tree made its way through the house. Older houses tree never made it past the attic. Houses built in the 90s. Trees were in the basement on two story houses spilt just straight through them. In the mid-90s. The code allowed for smaller framing boards for cost purposes. So houses that were less than 5-10 years old at the time were completely destroyed. 50 year old houses just needed the roof patched from a structural perspective.

I definitely do appreciate you taking time to make random videos in all aspects of building a home. Theres so many aspects that most people dont think about until its too late.

The one problem is in a fire they burn in 15 minutes fast than regular joints. I would use truss joint's instead.

Bro you better get out of those people's house before they catch you in there and call the cops

I’ve always heard some housing editions firefighters will not go in if it’s an upstairs fire with I- joists because the burn way quicker than traditional 2x10, 2x12, etc and collapse the 2nd story very quickly.

I prefer open web trusses, but if I am confident no utilities need to pass through and/or there are considerable cost savings, I would consider I-Joists

I only use solid oak for ALL
My framed homes. And only screws to fasten...very strong house.

Prefer trusses vs I joists. I joists get cut into by MEP during rough in’s. But with trusses MEP can pass through easier. Just my two cents.

Also, use screws on your floors instead if nails to further diminish the risk of squeaks. Don't try to save $5 and have squeaky floors. Use screws.

In Australia we either use LVL or hardwood ( Australian Hardwood )

LVL's are super strong and straight and true plus almost endless length availability .

Australian Kiln dried hardwood is almost as strong as steel and in some cases where using recycled old growth timber it is Stronger than structural steel !!

We have had to use an explosive charge Ramset gun to nail some of them !!

They lose structural integrity pretty quickly during a house fair. Something to keep in mind if you live next to a forest or an area with a lot of wild fires

Using floor trusses is/are better!! What happens to osb when it gets wet for whatever reason!!?

This was done simply to cheapen the cost of construction. In time the OSB will weaken as it absorbs moisture.
