I live on Oahu, but down south in Ewa Beach. We have several breaks, and because we aren't a surf destination it's never, ever crowded. Mostly older locals, military dudes, and lots of kids - all the aggressive angry surfer dudes wake up early and hit other spots. There's spots that aren't accessible by car, it's a ten minute SUP ride, where often there are ZERO people. Beautiful head high waves, and even a spot that breaks perfectly at double overhead. I rarely surf anywhere else, it ain't broke so I don't fix it. The only Pipe action I get is butt in the sand, beer in my hand.

To be fair it’s similar in much of the world. Reef Road in Florida is the only spot in the entire state that can get up to 15 feet which happens maybe 3 days a year so the locals are pretty aggressive on those days. Santa Cruz is very similar to Pipeline and you get heckled even if you’re a well known regular

As a grom howlie, I rode with the OG locals and pros as a body boarder. As scary as they seem, once you get to know them, they'll actually block for you to catch some gems. when they tell you to go, you better not chicken out, or they'll stop helping you. On the bright side, they'd push you well beyond your limits, and you will excel beyond what you thought you were capable of.
