Windows for Workgroups 3 11 Overview

A fairly in-depth look at Windows 3.11 with the assumption you're already familiar with the basics of a point-and-click GUI, probably a bit boring.

Finally I'm not the only person who prefers being an adult to being a kid. I can actually do things I want to do instead of being constrained or bound by rules. Yes being an adult means you have all the responsibility, but still you can choose what happens at least within your own domain.

Might I give you a tip my friend?  You can copy all of the windows 3.11 floppy contents into 1 folder and the installer will just go along without asking for each disk if you run the setup.exe from that folder.

I made a boot cd using the Win98SE bootable floppy image, added Dos 6.22 through win98se in their own folders on the cd, and changed the
Win98SE CDROM driver to a  universal DOS driver for IDE and SATA drives. I created a batch file menu to choose which version of windows to install, plain DOS install, or boot to the command prompt to do whatever.... Also created a bootable floppy and used the same universal cdrom driver and menu to use with systems that can't boot from cdrom. Even tossed in some old DOS benchmarking utilities as well so I can just run DOS straight from the cd for quick benchmarking.

Of course for old systems without a cdrom, it needs to be added but that is usually easy enough.

I am in total agreement about being forced now days to install everything without the option to not do so. I also loved how 3.0 - 95 ( I don't recall now if 98 did also ) let you install your video driver during installation.

The TCP/IP stack works fine without installing Win32s on 3.11, at least it did for me.

My first pc was Pentium 133MHz, 16MB RAM, HDD 1.2GB Quantum Bigfoot, VGA Trident 9440 1MB and had Windows 3.11.

I would love to run this on a AMD K6-2 500 Mhz. I think the best operating system that Microsoft has released since Windows for Workgroups 3 11 is Windows 8 primarily because how much time it takes for it to boot when compared with Windows 7.

I feel like the core user interface principle 95 and later have, as well as all Mac os systems, is they load you into a very good file manager as the base user interface, and this is what I don't like about 3.11. the file manager is terrible and it's not a "finder-like" design as windows 95+ uses, which I prefer. And windows defaults to the program manager, which teases you with Mac like icons but is a mere shell you can't use for serious management.
