One of the greatest union songs ever, sung by one of folk music's greatest voices, at the greatest festival of peace and love there ever was. An awesome choice you guys, you always make my day. Peace and love from Canada!

Her "Diamonds and Rust", a song about her relationship with Bob Dylan is my favorite of hers. Her vibrato is out of this world.

Joe Hill was a songwriter, labour activist and member of the Industrial Workers of the World, a true working class hero.

What strikes me is that these songs you choose are also pure history! In the 60's and 70's there was so much social, political, labor, racial change and unrest going on. And so many of these songs reflect those changes. A LOT has improved and a lot has not, still so far to go, just look around at the US and the world today.

As others have said "Diamonds and Rust, " which she wrote, should be next for her. The song is compelling, the arrangement gorgeous and her vocal performance entrancing.

The David she mentioned was her husband, David Harris. They met in jail, where they were both under arrest for anti-war and anti-draft activism.
The song is about union activist Joe Hill, who was accused of a murder there was no evidence for, and he was executed for.

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was her biggest US hit. Although a songwriter herself, Baez generally interprets other composers' work. She is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist.

She stood in front of half a million people with just her guitar and captivated them all. Talent!!

She was Bob Dylan’s greatest promoter and interpreter. They were lovers.
The hippie rock scene was also rooted in centuries of great folk music. Pete Seeger is one you should look into, along with Woody Guthrie. Those two fought for unions, the environment, racial equality- all important issues in the 60’s. And all the anti-war protests.
Her voice is considered one of the most beautiful of all time- check her out singing Dylan!

1960s female artist, Ronnie Spector died just today. She sang the song by her group called, “The Ronettes”, the song is called, “Be My Baby”.

She was instrumental in the early career of Bob Dylan, with whom she was romantically involved for several years. She was such a strong voice for social change and the anti-war movement.

One of her most beautiful songs is “Diamonds and Rust”, written about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Please check it out. Also, please do more Linda Ronstadt. 🌺✌️

Joan is the Queen of Folk Music. Check out "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Love Is Just AFour Letter Word', and "Diamonds And Rust" (which is the story of her relationship with Bob Dylan) . All are awesome songs.

Protest songs are a big part of Folk music (of which Joan Baez is, imo, the indisputable queen). For a serious look at Folk music, you must check out the most influential folk and protest singer/songwriter of all time. Woody Guthrie famously traveled the country during the 30', 40's and 50's, and documented, through his songs, the union labor wars, which were intense during those years, and other of society's problems. He was famously anti-fascist and he's the icon that every folk singer since was inspired by.

Joan has offered so much with her incredible gift and this is one of them. We grew up singing this song in our home. We were a big family so it was pretty great. Thank you!

I was in the crowd that Friday night. Joan came on right after Arlo Guthrie. There is an excellent a capella version by Joan during that same performance of Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Very misty eerie atmosphere that night. Mostly folk acts that night because of the rain.

She is beyond any voice ever heard. I loved her performance of Swing Low Sweet Chariot. For female Friday react to her acoustic performance from 1959 Barbara Allen

Joan was a powerful voice in the anti-war movement. To this day she continues to fight corrupt government through her music. Listen to her latest, Nasty Man. She has a magnificent voice, led an interesting life, and always speaks for peace.

This is an old song. Joe Hill was a great American. He fought and died for the rights of workers. Back then, "libertarianism" meant "anarchy." No gods, no masters. It was co-opted by the right in the 1950s.

Bob Dylan's "I Dreamed I saw St. Augustine" (a beautiful song) is based on this.

A great performance by a great artist. A major branch of folk music has always been songs of the working people, union songs songs of labor struggle. Joe Hill was a early Labor organizer involved with with International Workers of the World IWW in the early 1900’s. He was a poet and songwriter as well as activist and organizer. He was a hero of early 20th century labor movement. He was a huge thorn in the side of the major industries of the time. Joe Hill was convicted and executed in Utah in 1915 for a murder that it was far from clear he had any involvement in but the rich and powerful were glad enough to be rid of him. The song Ms. Baez performed at Woodstock was written after his death as a tribute and protest and became a major anthem of union movements.
