Back in the summer of 2000, I built a squad of 5 rough riders mounted on cold one dragons. I got all the pewter parts from GW mail order: cold ones, lances, assault weapons, and riders consisting of Tallarn Desert Raider torsos and legs. Each model ended up costing about $18.
The unit helped me win first prize for best army at a local tournament that summer. Despite how cool the models were, Rough Riders were nerfed in 4th Edition, and became an ineffective liability. I still have the models to today though, and use them for various skirmish-scale war games.

What a cool look at the past! I think they've knocked it out of the park with the new Rough Rider kit: bringing some classic elements in with their new look and quality.

Good survey of the release history; reminds me that somewhere I have a few of the generic mounted troopers and a few Atillans stashed that I want to paint in Tallarn-compatible colors

I have a good 20 or so tallarn rough riders, and I’m very happy they’re being brought back

I had one lead Rogue Trader Rough Rider, on those huge plastic horses. He was armed with a Laspistol. For 2nd Edition I had two Attilan Rough Rider units, with the Lieutenant, painted to my best standard for the time. I'm really excited for the new Attilan plastics, I'm glad to see such things be redone.

Rough Riders were still in the 8th edition index. So they were still tournament legal for quite a ways into the edition.

"Guy in top middle" has a LasCannon! In Rogue Trader, heavy weapons were single man units.

I have some of the 2nd Gen Attilan Roughriders and look forward to using them again (at least in OPR). The Rough Rider 401202 (Time Mark: 2:11ish) is fielding an old-school Lascannon. Great stuff and a fun walk through a lot of memories.

I love the uniformity of Rogue Trader-era Imperial Guard, the fact their cavalry are just their normal guys on horses gives them a much more unified feel - the Attilans are nice in their own way but if you were playing 2nd Ed post-1995 your army was going to be a horrible mish-mash of regiments in a way the old-school Sci Fi Guardsmen weren't (until the alternate heavy weapon teams were eventually released, anyway)

I never liked the Attilan RRs, the Tallarn however, 👍☺
I now use AOS Pistoliers for the bulk of the figure and horse, with a little modelling to provide the lance. I just use the Cadian heads on them and paint them as Cadians with extra green armour.
It works for me ☺
