For me personally, Virgil Van Djik has easily been the best defender on the planet in the last few years. I've been watching football for over 25 years and I've never seen a defender like him. He is the complete package. A complete defender.

The award for the best defender of all time has to go to an Italian since Italy is known to produce the best defenders. Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Baresi, Matterazzi, Bonucci, Chiellini. I believe any of them is better than both Ferdinand and Van Dijk.

Maldini played tennis. Baresi was a barman and Beckenbauer was a curling aficionado. Bear in mind Maldini and Baresi as a centre back duo conceded 23 goals in 196 games, playing in an incredibly tough era when serie A was as tough as any league ever and they were doing incredibly in champions league too.
