IAS Vs. IFS (Battle of UPSC Services)

Here is a detailed video on why people chose IAS over IFS. I discuss the end-to-end raw power, traveling, and influencer-driven culture of Tanmay Bhatt and Dhruv Rathee.

Send me your questions on :

Episode 1 of Money Heist will be out next week - with an IFS officer based in the USA - where will discuss the lifestyle, salaries, and perks of being in the IFS vs. IAS Vs. IPS

How to bounce back after failing in the UPSC CSE?

I was born and brought up in Gwalior. When my friends from the rest of the world curiously ask me which place do I come from in India? I always have to state the reference to Agra (the home of the Taj Mahal). I tell them, I come from Gwalior - around 100 KMs from Agra.

While growing up, my city was famous for 10-15 hours of power cuts, crimes in the surrounding areas (Bhind, Morena, Chambal), and desperately poor townfolks who never had much hope for economic betterment. The situation was really bad - at least while I was growing up.

The only means to achieve glory for a middle-class Indian was to get into the #IITs, and if for some reason that doesn’t work out - get into Delhi University to later prepare for the #IAS exam.

And why not? At IITs or at DU - kids from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities will be exposed to a whole new world. They will interact will students from across the country, they will compete, they will collaborate - and will always be on the edge to grow!

Some of my closest friends from Gwalior - went on to achieve incredible feats on the global stage.

But for those who were left behind - succumb to a condition called the ‘losers effect’ - it is when you start doubting yourself, your actions, and every decision of your life after a minor setback. Low confidence is reflected in anything that you do in life.

And the sad fact is that 99% of young kids will fall into this trap. They will fail in some ‘life-defining’ exams, and the rest of their career trajectory will be downhill.

They will fail not because they are not talented, smart, or diligent. They will fail because there are too many people competing for minuscule opportunities in India.

What should you do in such a scenario?

1. Creating something of your own - I’m truly in awe of today’s generation from tier 2 and tier 3 Indian Cities - who are hustling, and taking asymmetric bets in life. Every week, 2-3 hours of my time on the calendar is booked for these young bright minds from nooks and corners of India - who are 19-22-year-old kids. They are launching some really innovative businesses.

2. Create your own quality network - One major reason why people at IIMs, and Ivy League thrive is because of the network they build in those institutes. Build your own diverse peer group. This is of paramount importance. Reach out to people on LinkedIn for guidance. Most of the people are kind.

3. Don’t be scared of failure: This is one thing my parents always told me. And this is the first thing I tell our fellows when they join the GGI community.

And lastly, Travel. It will BLOW your mind! And if you are in your early 20s - and are struggling with money. I will be happy to host you (free of cost) at least in the places where I’m based!

3 years ago, I missed #UPSC final list by 8 marks. My score in optionals was amongst the highest in India, my interview score was second highest.

It is extremely critical that exceptional people join IAS, but for those who couldn't should know that entry through an exam isn’t the only route in 21st Century India to make a difference.

Many youngsters preparing for IAS in India quit their jobs, take multiple years of sabbatical, and thoroughly screw up their 20s - in anxiety and depression with a hope of getting into civil services (that has a yearly cycle, less than .5% success rate, and an archaic curriculum).

There is no better way to screw up your life than prepare for government exams in India (without any backup plan).

From a career in the United Nations to social impact, to getting laterally hired - you can do a million things to create a large-scale impact.

"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors"

Look forward to inspiring youngsters to become part of the Public Policy Ecosystem via GGI's Policy Scholars Program - along with innumerable partnered organizations (such as BCG, Clinton Health Access Initiative etc) working closely with political and business leaders.

Who is GGI Impact Fellowship for?

While GGI Scholar is our flagship education program, GGI Fellowship is a renowned work-study program, uniquely designed for those who lack real-world consulting and public policy experience.

1. You are a determined young professional looking to pivot in consulting and keen to learn by doing a consulting project directly with a mentor from Mckinsey, BCG, Bain, Dalberg

2. You are a UPSC aspirant looking for a relevant Plan B for Civil Services and keen to contribute to the social impact sector

3. You are looking for a unique pre MBA/MPP work experience in the social development consulting space by advising leading national NGO

4. You are ready to pivot careers and looking to be connected to GGI employment partners

I believe you are letting out the gold. Man it would become difficult for us to join IFS if so many people know the reality.

Reasons for IAS over IFS:

Diversity of work
More resources to work
Better promotions
Easy to connect with friends and families as you live in India
Traveling around the world has become convenient nowdays.
My question: Were people aware 40 years ago? Why they chose IFS over IAS that time?

All I know is this one IFS officer was posted in Afghanistan, got killed by taliban bombing, Govt of India's position was compromised. Another instance, Current Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra literally got thrashed by militants at Gun point when he was posted in Pakistan. Again the position of Govt of India compromised. In both the cases, dignity and lives of these officers were at stake....in IAS even if one is posted as a collector in any Naxal affected area or any north eastern insurgent areas armed rebels would never ever dare threatening the govt representative...even if they do they do it with utmost care keeping everything ups and down in their mind....I guess that is the power of an ias and the weight it commands.

Thanks for this wonderful explanation, Naman! 🙌

IMO, both the aforementioned services are good and choosing one depends upon the priorities of a candidate (and the thoughts of the selection panel at the UPSC 😉).

Nevertheless, IFS officer gets more to travel around the world and has a better global POV.

You’ve been working working for a great cause! Every year more than a million people spend their crucial years of life preparing for a thousand vacancies. Besides, I only partly agree with your opinion that people choose IAS over IFS because of less exposure. Prior to 1990 IFS was preferred over IAS (you can check the ranks and service allotment); only after this expansion in flow of information and exposure people have started choosing IAS over IFS. This can be attributed partly to the fact that working and staying abroad is no longer an attraction for Indian people; let alone the cost of staying far away from parents.

U mentioned about connections of IAS is more than IFS. I will not agree with u here . As an IFS, u are directly in touch with President, PMO and External Affairs Ministry. As an IAS u rarely get chance to interact with these three as an IFS Officer get . I mean the level of connection an IFS Officer will have with President, PM can never be same for an IAS.
