It's worth mentioning the absurdity of JD Vance denigrating the military career of a fellow veteran, when Vance was essentially in public affairs and never saw combat. His title of "combat correspondent" is also misleading as it suggests something akin to Vietnam, with correspondents often going in on the frontlines. Just typical right wing projection.

In the USA normal military retirement is 20 years. He asked to stay on and did 24.. then retired from national guard.
