My GL500 x166 has off-range package that includes Low gear.
I took it once through a forest & when I got stuck in mud I was able to drive out using the low range from first try.
BTW:
W166 is ML/GLE
X166 is GL/GLS

He doesn't know how to use momentum to work the snow. He slowed, The tires liquified the snow, now he's stuck in a lubricated trap. Keep moving 5-15mph down a familiar road.

If it is unfamiliar or particularly rough, park on a flat spot with good traction and walk to the next flat spot. I've taken 2WD vehicles up 4WD trails using this technique.

You obviously have the money, go buy a beater 2WD 4cyl pickup and put in your time. Bring your experienced friend with a Jeep.
