The area refers to the "cross-sectional area"

This means if you were to look at the area of the very end of the plank. It's thickness multiplied by its width.

Most of the time lumber is referred to by its cross sectional area. a "two by four" piece of wood has a cross sectional area of 8in^2

Whether you purchase that piece of wood 5 feet long or 16 feet long, it's still a two by four because the cross sectional area is 8 inches.
