Hello all: Because of all of the information that Steve has been gladly supplying, I will be doing a 3-4 day video demo on the best ways to make your fiber needles for your gramophone. Here is the article that I wrote for CAPS (Canadian Antique Phonograph Society):

Hello all:

From now until the next meeting of CAPS, I will be doing a video documented demo of not only how to make the fiber needles, but also there are some considerations as to planning the construction of your fiber needle depending on how you want to place the needle in your reproducer.

Let me explain what I am talking about:

There are basically four positions that you can put your newly created fiber needle into on your reproducer, also length of the needle from the end of the reproducer to the record is a factor.

Before you actually create the fiber needle, you have to think about 'where am I going to position the rind of the bamboo in the first place?' The answer to that will determine how you would proceed on creating your bamboo needle, also you have to think ahead at where that rind is going to go BEFORE making the needle.

Let me get into the four positions that the rind can be when yo use a Bamboo needle:

(1) On the very top of the needle, in other words the rind does not touch the grooves of the record at all.

(2) On the left side of the needle, in other words the rind would touch the left side of the groove in the record.

(3) On the right side of the needle, in other words the rind would touch the right side of the needle.

(4) And the last position is having the rind on the very bottom of the needle, this too is a valid position, as the rind would touch on both sides of the grove in the record.

In conclusion I would like to say that I do not know which position will be the best for playing back a mint 78 RPM record with your reproducer.

That s why I will be doing over the next three or four days a detailed video documentation on the process of making a fiber needle for each of these 4 positions, the position to cut them with your needle cutter is very important and also how you cut them.

All of this and more will be covered in the next few days via a detailed video demo and thank you to The Phonograph Stop on YouTube for all of the information to how to do this.

Thank You Russ Campbell.

Steve you inspired me to do this video documented research on what I have written in the above, I can if permitted post a link here to these videos, and in return I will post a link to your channel on my channel. It is nice to work together on a slowly dying hobby and bring more interest to all of the young people, as you know there will be a lot of the older generation that are leaving the hobby due to death or other reasons and the young people will be getting all of their precious gramophone materials.

I for one would like to prevent the eventual dumping of these nice machines into the landfill.

Thank You Russ Campbell.

If you purchase the bamboo skewers for meat, they are already hardened, and I found some bamboo at dollarama for $2.50, you get three four foot one inch diameter poles for that price.

Can you tell me where ti get this polycryl solutiuon ???? And do you need any bamboo, I have tones of the stuff .... I bought 3 sets of 4 foot bamboo poles.

hello! What do you use to harden the needles after you make them? Do you apply it every time you clip a new tip? Or is it soaked through the whole material so that's unnecessary? I have a bunch of these and I'm getting to the end of my unused supply so will need to renew all the tips soon. I have the first nifty clipping tool that you feature. Thanks!
