Now _that's_ a Veterans Day show!
There's nothing more American than Kate Smith singing this Irving Berlin classic!
Man, could she belt it out!

Given what's happening in our country today, the lyrics should be, "God save America".

President Roosevelt was right when he introduced Kate to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939: This is Kate Smith! This is America!

When Irving Berlin wrote this song, we All Knew We All Were Americans! Not European or Whatever- American; But American! America wasn't perfect, but it was the Best in a very confused and scared world. Anyone remember, "Over There"? Also from Irving Berlin. What Talent❤❤❤

Thanks for sharing! Irving Berlin wrote " God Bless America " in 1918 for his soldier show Yip Yip, Yiphank . However, it was withdrawn and lay unused until Kate Smith asked Berlin for a new patriotic song to sing on the radio for Armistice Day, 1938. It became an instant hit . The poem " America the Beautiful " by Katherine Lee Bates, a professor of English at Wellesley College, was inspired by a 1893 visit to Pike's Peak . It is unknown who joined it with Samuel Augustus Ward's hymn Materna, composed in 1882. Both songs have been suggested as alternatives to " The Star Spangled Banner " as our national anthem, for they celebrate America's great assets -- its natural beauty and its people .

Thought you might enjoy some musical history ;)

Shame on the Philadelphia Flyers for "canceling" Kate Smith. It's an absolute disgrace.

🦅 God Bless America, the land that I Love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above. 🇺🇲
Tomorrow marks the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. There never will be a time when we won't think of that time that changed America forever. I can still remember that day so vividly, it was a day just like today.. I remember exactly where I was when that first plane hit the first tower..Our whole world as we knew it, had forever changed. To all those who perished... May you Rest In Peace. You didn't die in vain, because you will never, ever be forgotten! Pray for Peace! 🙏 Thank you for sharing this today, on the eve of 9/11.
