12-TET can work well for Nihavend. I wonder, though, if a tanbur or kanun player would insist on playing a "just" upper Hicaz from Re, with the narrower 5-limit augmented second (75/64) and a just minor sixth (Mi 4 instead of 5 komas flat)?

I assume that it would probably be too much of a bother for a kanun player to keep changing the mandal for the Mi note, so they would pick either the Pythagorean or the just minor 6th and stick with it. As an ud player, I try to keep the Hicaz as "soft chromatic" (according to Byzantine terminology) in all contexts.
