The stinking corpse lily 🌸AKA🌸Rafflesia🪰(beaded art piece)

The stinking corpse Lily has always been one of my favorite flowers, not only because I find its appearance delightful but also because of how fascinating it is as a plant and parasite . The Harvard journal article on it is quite good and I highly suggest the read.
I wasn't even able to fit all of the fascinating biological facts I learned about it in this video. I plan on going more into the build itself in a bit of a longer video, but I was too excited not to share this short 😁🌸🪰
So may I present to you a fantastical version of the Rafflesia flower from the flies point of view hehe .(fake fly at the end) (My version is on the smallest end of these flowers. some species of rafflesia get much bigger than what I created)

As far as build time, this might have taken me the longest out of all of my personal projects. turns out sewing on individual beads takes a really long time, even if the project is relatively small. 😂 But I absolutely love fiber art so I had a blast (And basically didn't film any of the beading much to editor me's chagrin)

The vine in the art piece is braided together strands including bubble wrap fake barbed wire, grocery sacks and gauze. It's attached to the frame with a screw hidden in it to mount the flower piece on so it's technically two independent art pieces that come together.

The background music is a track from the services story blocks titled "Bedouin caravan mirage"

In the older animal crossing games, if you let your weeds grow out and leave trash all over your island long enough then Rafflesia will sprout and attract flies! The villagers will also complain about it a lot 😂

Plant trying to be a fungus. Love it. It's so heckin' bizarre in all aspects...like seriously, what on earth happened to give rise to such a thing? It's fascinating.

I love your explanation of the Rafflesia being a parasitic flower to the placing of the eyeballs on your ornament which made it look like an eldritch abomination (which is a compliment), lol.

I LOVE HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER! It’s like the organisms are giving each other little friendship bracelets; it’s so cute!

I will admit I lost track of what you were saying because I was so mesmerized when you were making the flower

The flower Gloom and Vileplume was based on. Knowing this now makes me understand that the flower is only a parasite on top of their heads. A poor little Oddish becomes infected with the spores. And people thought Parasect line was creepy.

The Stranger Things fan in me can’t unsee the similarities between the Rafflesia & a DEMOGORGON❤️The end result is fabulous!!

The eyes? Wow thanks I hate this.

(Incredibly well constructed, and possibly the most unique inspiration point I’ve seen in a while. 10/10)

“No leaves stems shoots or roots” has the same energy as that whole “your brain is smooth, no wrinkles or cracks, valleys or curves” thing.

Or whatever the exact quote is. I forget. But this made me think of it.

I had to watch this video twice so as to listen to what you were saying about the flower...I was simply mesmerized the first time by your stunning artwork! Just gorgeous! <3

This is like. The _perfect_ song choice for a video about rafflesias. It fits the perfect, otherworldly vibe. You art is also gorgeous by the way… how you just _know_ how to construct things like that when you have the idea is beyond me!

This flower is so pretty but it totally gave me demogorgan vibes, like the fact that it closes and forms a cabbage like head, then opens up to a big red flower 🌺…

I'll make a longer video where I go into the construction of this art piece, but I love this flower too much to not share some of the fun facts I learned about it ❤🪰🌸
This one might have taken the longest to construct out of all of my personal art pieces 😅 turns out hand beading takes a long time (next time I'll try out a different beading technique that might go faster lol but this was so fun to make!)

At my elementary school, they had some of these in the greenhouse and whenever they bloomed we’d drop whatever we were doing to go and see them

There's another incredibly rare flower similar to this called the corpse flower. It's practically a vertical, green and purple version of this flower. You can find it blooming (at times) in the Toronto Zoo, Ontario, Canada. I saw it blooming once when I still lived there, and it also attracts carrion flies.
Just your friendly plant person 👍🏼. I just really like corpse flowers :).
