Critical Hits’ Damage In Gen 1 #pokemon

Critical hits are a mechanic in every Pokemon game, but the exact mechanics have varied over the years. In generation 2 [Gold, Silver, Crystal] through 5 [Black, White], they do double the normal damage. But crits in generation 1 [Red, Blue, Yellow] worked a little differently.

Crits also ignored ALL stat changes in gen 1, including drops on the opponent and your own boosts
Lost a few sweep games on randbats to this

Clearly gen 1 you go so fast you hit them a few times at once.

Reminds me how in gen 1, focus energy was the only move that was supposed to raise the crit rate of a pokemon. But due to a bug in the code, the move makes crits significantly less likely, making it so that no pokemon that learns the move would use it for conventional means. The only thing id fathom I'd help with is set up sweepers avoiding crits negating their buffs

What was game freak on when they designed crits in gen 1. Crit rate is based on base speed, not your actual speed stat. Crit modifier is based on level. Crit ignores beneficial stat modifiers so it can do less damage than a regular attack.

Gen I also had a unique mechanic where the Critical Hits were based on the Pokémon's speed. The faster the Pokémon is, the higher their chances were to get a Critical Hit. So Pokémon like Persian, Dugtrio, and Electrode, excelled in delivering Critical Hits whenever they attacked. And on top of that, if that Pokémon could use a move that had a high Critical Hit ratio, like Slash as an example, you're almost always guaranteed to get a Critical Hit every time it made contact.

First time I've heard of gen 1 not having a feature completely bugged out 😭

Your crit rate also increased based on your speed stat, which means a glitch mon with 0 speed wouldn't be able to crit at all.

Yeah, played way too much g1 randoms (in which Pokémon are balanced by level)

G1 crit rate is based on speed, Crit damage modifier on level, and crits ignore ALL stat changes, making swords dance and amnesia terrible to use if fishing for crits.

I’ve seen way to many venusaurs fall to they, though a lot swords dance into a special (all grass moves) attack anyways xd

No wonder the pokemon I try to catch in gen 5 faint so fast from crits

Something i heard but idk if it's true is apparently crits ignore any stat boosts the target has

Damn, paired with the crit rate depends on the speed, no wonder dugtrio was a Meta pokemon

As a reminder, crit chance i think scaled with speed in gen 1, and mewtwo who has a stupid high speed will crit constantly.

You mean a critical hit all this time in gen 9 was a 50% more damage instead of 2x the DAMAGE!!!!

Honestly my favourite pokemon is honchrow and the fact he has super luck and 2 crit moves just give him nothing but crits

I thought it boosted it by 2x every level up. So at level 100 it would be... 2¹⁰⁰ that big

So what if you transfer a mouse Corrado to join one RIP flower track

It’s so confusing when you use multiple different scales, like saying double and 50% in the same sentence, consistency would make this easier to understand

Is that how crits did less damage in gen 1?
