A Neo-Nazi friend of mine has the same type of story when he converted to Islam. He hit his mom, then his family called police to catch him, he ran away to a library to calm himself. He decided to read a random book. It was a coincidence he randomly picked Quran. He read the first chapter and then kept reading. Finally, he decided to revert to Islam and apologize to his mom. Even though he was a hardcore Nazi, he is now completely changed.

This totally explains why the prophet ‎ﷺ told Umar "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan sees you taking a path, he follows a path other than yours." (Bukhari 3294)

I reflected on this story for many decades!
Omar read the page of the Quran without assistance. He managed to read the text which was written without any dots or short vowels, in addition, most long vowels were missing too! How did he managed to read it, and what could we possibly benefit from knowing this.
There is a research on how educated students read English, they don't look closely to individual letters, rather, they take a glance at the shape of the word and figure it out. Now let's go back to reading ancient Arabic text, Omar must have been doing an extrapolation to what this research concluded. He was taking a glance at each word and at the sentence as the whole figuring out words and sentences in their context. By doing so, he was forced to read and in depth understand what he was reading. This explains the shock he had after reading the Quran written in ancient Arabic script.
I suggest someone tests this hypothesis, by asking experts in Arabic grammar to read while analyzing grammatically what they are reading and understanding it. I anticipate the tremendous impact of the Quran on them.
