The Rise Of Populism In Europe

Mass migration, and the problems associated with it, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders, however, these parties are invariably illiberal, anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States.

Vivien A. Schmidt is the Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, Professor of International Relations in the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Professor of Political Science at Boston University, as well as Founding Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe. She will speak on the rise of Populism in Europe and the impacts across the world.

5:38 - Vivien Schmidt: “I don’t know their names” also I’m an expert and you should always unconditionally trust the experts wittout questions.
Maybe learn their names, at least, before pretending to be an expert. At least fake it till you make it, don’t just give up entirely. Or just admit you are spouting an opinion on Anglosphere populism, not an actual lecture on continentwide populism.

Is populism an existential threat to political and economic liberalism? I sure hope so

Another academic out of touch with the reality of ordinary people's lives.

Populism is a result of the inability of politicians to adequately manage problems countries are facing. I think that is the main issue. Of course there are some weird theories going around but I think the majority of populist voters really do want to improve their country.

All my life I tried not to be a racist... but now in the Netherlands 2 lawyers have been shot by a moroccan street gang, A police officer got knocked out by Turkish ppl for handling traffic (Rotterdam), a moroccan guy knocked out a 63 year old conductress because she gave him a ticket for not paying his fare (Breda). Something very basic is very wrong with Islam and from now on we refuse to pay the price. No more left wing politics for me. Muslims in need can simply pray a bit harder in their own countries. I'm done, my tolerance has run out.
