Terrifying picture of NASA astronaut free-floating in space

The Space Shuttle Challenger, launched on Feb 3, 1984, carried out the first untethered spacewalks by astronauts Bruce McCandless II Robert L. Stewart. They used a manned maneuvering unit (MMU) to venture far from the ship, with McCandless going 320 feet on a "free-flying" mission using joystick-controlled nitrogen thrusters. This photograph captures this historic moment and the sense of freedom in such exploration.
