Who gives a crap about the audio quality. I'm just glad they posted this. Great conversation. Content trumps production value

Note: A link to the app will be available later today. We will post it as soon as we have it.

Why do I get the feeling Adam was staring at this setup wondering how he could completely redo his shop layout but built around modular tables like this.

This is what CADers and Makers need!

I've been CADing for 6+ years now and learned CAM a little over a year ago. The process you have to go through to take someone else's part and modify it is excruciatingly tedious. You always have to deal with understanding that person's constraints or recreating constraints because you're working from a .step file. This help us stop having to reinvent the wheel the same way everytime.

This is amazing. This guy is amazing. This idea of this app is amazing.

Parametric designs are great. Starting to see a lot of parametric items on thingiverse. So you easily modify a bunch of features and sizes. Pretty awesome.

That's amazing. What a great mindset. I think it might lessen the "barriers-to-entry" for making. As a programmer, I understand the setup phase, the part you have to do every time before you can get started. It sure would be a pain to want to make something but spend your next month setting up a space to even begin. Great idea.

The inconsistencies in the audio are the result of an agressive application of noise reduction if I'm not mistaken. Probably because there was quite some constant background noise, like an a/c unit or something like that. Awesome concept - table-app. Can't find it online yet though - that would be even more awesome ;-)

Is that an N55 bike in the background, next room over?

Audio was 100% fine for me btw

High end CAD packages like Solidowrks and AutoCAD have smart parts that can do this type of stuff but the barrier to entry is in the thousands of dollars range. I imagine that companies like Autodesk and Dassault could introduce plugins to export that type of parts to smart PDFs but the solution presented in this video, although it presumes starting from scratch, seems simpler. Great stuff!

Very cool idea!
I really believe in open-source.
Even as a professional, I bumped into so many issues with patents.
Sometimes great ideas are completely locked into some kind of patent.
Unfortunately it happens quite often that a company doesn't do anything anymore with that patent or the execution of their product is poorly done.
In both cases the rest of the world can't use some great solutions for some real problems.
In a sense knowledge is being locked instead of being shared and further being developed to make a better world.

So much Case in point: My makerspace came across a great deal (c) on some tables, which we wanted to use in our classroom. We ended up buying enough of them to outfit our textiles area and co-working space. The hitch is, our board spent hours deliberating on whether we should spend the money on pre-manufactured tables, or should we make them in the 'space. If we had had these apps, there wouldn't have been a question. We could have made custom designs for a table top to go in the classroom, a different table top for the textiles area, a third for the co-working space, which could have all just be attached to the underlying framework, and cut out using our ShopBot in a couple days time, then, hey, build party, beer and pizza provided, oh, look, we now have tables for everything!

Blair is giving off a very Jamie Hyneman vibe to me. White shirt: check, khaki pants: check, straight forward no non since attitude: check. mustache: check. Just need the beret and it would be like old times. love it !!!

I like this app driven idea. The high end cad programs can take a long time to master.

I really like this idea. Make design abstractable all the way up and down. Want a table, download one and tweak it. Want to design a table, download other things, take and modify parts from them, and use them in a table, and then tweak it to your exact needs.

Watching this series the inner Star Trek fan keeps jumping up and down saying, "This is the start of a replicator. They're building a freaking REPLICATOR!".

Thanks for the app. Very useful. It will be awesome if it's possible to use metric units.

Jonathan Ward, as in the guy who owns and runs Icon 4x4? If so, that was an excellent name drop

Hey I am a designer myself and like to use equations in CAD software for easily changing my models. Is there any way to convert the solidworks model to a model used in this app?

love the idea and want to make one for a carpentry course i have started but the dxf file does not open or shows nothing when opened in autocad any ideas whats going on guys?
